Should we change our cabinet layout in open kitchen/living room/nook?
Comments (2)I can't save your screen shot (?), so I did a quick estimation of the kitchen space, using as much of the existing layout as possible. I put the fridge near the dining nook, but that wall could be flipped, with the fridge next to the DR. That would keep the clean-up area completely separate from the prep/cooking areas, but the DW door would open partially against the end of the peninsula: Everything on the clean-up wall flipped: The black arrow is for corner storage that's accessed from the back of the cabinet. Or it could be accessed from the FR side, and since you have a table nearby, the peninsula could be extended over a run of cabinets, to increase storage and make up for the lost pantry and hanging cabs. I gave you a KW mixer. :) Back with one more--if the door to the formal DR could be moved to the hallway, the range wall could be extended, and a wide island with prep sink would work. Except for storage in the middle, drawers in the second run of cabinets in the island would have easy access from the ends. Optional upper cabs beside of range hood. (Contingent on the hood being vented as in the current kitchen.) If anyone else wants to borrow this plan to experiment, please feel free....See MoreHELP!! No idea how to maximise our limited space!!
Comments (12)I like Mark’s idea of creating the sitting room. It keeps the door from being at the top of the steps. Also, you could eventually have the baby cot in the sitting room, and you can still talk (or plan for a little sibling) with the doors closed. You could even do sliding patio-type doors, with curtains if you like. If there isn’t room for that, I lived in a house with double doors at the top of two steps; the doors swung into the den, from the sunken living room. However, the doors only had a catch, not a latch, and were not used that frequently; they were usually kept open. Do you have enough headroom at those stairs? If you add doors there, you need the doorframe which would reduce the headroom....See MoreDo I have to change out these older brass/mirror closet doors?
Comments (9)Looks like you have a patio door and a good sized window in the room as well; so you probably have plenty of light. If you don't need a mirror, then you can cover them with removable wallpaper (essentially oversized contact paper). The only problem is that the wallpaper is not usually wide enough so you have to use 2 and match any pattern. They stuck on very well but can be stripped. We had mirror doors too but kept hearing about how outdated they are so this is what we did when we put the house up for sale. The realtor was impressed !...See MoreHelp! Comments (56)With that mat (rusty red and gold colours), I would avoid pink, purple or blue flowers and go with yellow, red, white and orange. For example, a couple of pots of crocus and/or daffodils in the planter in the spring, then switch them out to annuals e.g red trailing geraniums, then gold or bronze chrysanthemums in the fall when the annuals die. Add some ivy to trail over the side. I like the mat because it has the gray of your siding and is still quite colourful. I'd avoid blue mats if you're looking to match flowers to it - there is less selection in blue annuals. For the chair or bench I suggested, it needs to be small. We have one in that spot - only 11" deep, 40" long, 16" high. Very plain painted wood. We find it very useful. Similar to this but ours is even smaller. Search for outdoor dining bench or patio dining bench....See MoreByron Murry
