is there a "catch" with the website BuildDirect??
Comments (7)Warning about BuildDirect!!!! The company is based in Vancouver British Columbia. If there is a problem with your product or your order. This makes it difficult to legally pursue them. When you purchase from BuildDirect, the Terms of Use of their website WAIVES YOUR RIGHT TO SUE them in small claims court. Further the terms of use also means you agree to have any dispute settled by an arbitration organization THAT BUILDDIRECT CHOOSES. You be the judge if that places you the consumer at a disadvantage. Lastly if you choose to participate in this arbitration process, you must travel to Vancouver British Columbia to do so. BuildDirect uses all these tactics as in my case to avoid honoring their warranty....See MoreBuild Direct reviews 2013
Comments (2)DO NOT BUY FROM BUILDDIRECT. I wrote of my experience after buying 2,000 sq ft of their Vanier Cosmopolitan engineered flooring. It widely delaminated. Their inspector made absolutely no conclusion of cause in his official report, but BuildDirect blamed my installer. I had a highly respected certified flooring inspector who also is certified an expert witness in Nevada for flooring issues, who determined unequivocally that the flooring was defective and said so in his written report. Unfortunately, BuildDirect is located in Vancouver, Canada. Further, when you purchase from them, their website Terms of Service, waives your right to take them small claims court, and requires you go to Canada, and arbitrate with an organization that BuildDirect supports, and chooses. Save yourself the headache, heartache and expense. Avoid this company. I ended up spending approximately $50000 for a job bid at approximately 17K. I had to pay to have the BuildDirect floor demolished, then repair and put down a new subfloor, then install new flooring. PS. BuildDirect stated that engineered flooring could not be installed in Las Vegas due to low humidity (Why did they sell, and ship to Las Vegas then?). Well I purchased another brand of engineered flooring of the exact same species (Santos Mahogany) from another manufacturer. Two years later, it is still beautiful with no delamination as occurred with the BuildDirect product....See MoreBuilddirect Vanier flooring
Comments (10)Just to summarize for ANY ONE considering buying from BuildDirect why YOU SHOULD RUN AWAY FROM BUILDDIRECT! 1)Based in Canada. Makes it difficult to pursue them if there is problem with order or product 2)Most (all?)of BuildDirect flooring products manufactured in China. In my case they misrepresented that product met current North American Standards (HPVA EF2009 standards). 3) You CANNOT sue them in small claims court and MUST go to Canada to use an arbitrator from a firm that BuildDirect chooses to resolve a dispute. 4) Their 25 yr warranty is essentially voided by the fact that every house in America will have humidity levels which fall outside the required 35-55% levels required to maintain the warranty. They will use this fact to void your warranty....See MoreGranite countertops from BuildDirect
Comments (5)I can't imagine your builder has the equipment to handle and cut a granite slab. In granite yards, the slabs are generally moved using something along the lines of a crane. Even a finished piece ready to install requires special equipment: Build Direct is offering ready-to-use slabs, which makes the moving a little easier, but not easy. Their slabs are also offered in a series of given sizes. There is no modification for the walls in your kitchen which are probably not as straight and square as the slabs. If you look for threads on problems with counter tops not fitting snugly up to the wall, you'll see why this is important. This particular piece is a peninsula and there is no backsplash to hide an iffy cut along the wall: Say, for arguments sake, that your space matches one of their sizes nicely and your walls are straight and square, that just leaves the sink cut out. This is 3 cm granite. It needs a super heavy duty saw and a steady hand. For an undermount sink, you are going to see the edges of the cut, so they need to be really straight. The corners need to be just so. You are not going to cut this inside your kitchen as the granite dust will get everywhere and seriously muck up all your drawer slides. That means the piece needs to be moved after the cut is made. If you look at the first photo, you'll see that the piece has a splint sort of deal across the front of the sink cut-out. Without something of that nature, your piece is likely to break in transit, even if the transit is short. I'm not saying this can't be done, just that you need to be really cautious and have realistic expectations of how this will turn out. It looks to me like Builder Direct is targeting builders who are doing spec houses as economically as possible and who are willing to acquire the equipment necessary to make this work out more or less right. I would not expect most builders to take this on. Personally, if the cost of granite is more than the budget can comfortably cover, I'd go with laminate. We had white laminate counter tops for 40 years and they were more than satisfactory; at the end they were still nice and white, scratch free, and had only a couple of small nicks. Considering that we use our counters not just for cooking, but for all sorts of craft and sewing projects, this is particularly impressive. I even clamped a wood carving project to it and carved away with no ill results. Laminate is also very builder friendly. I find its biggest drawback not being able to do an undermount sink, which is sad, but not fatal....See MoreRelated Professionals
