multi level split

I live in a multi level home, my question is... from the kitchen to the family room is down 5 steps. The kitchen is vinyl wood, the family room now is carpet. We are re-doing the family room flooring and I would like to do the same floor that is up in the kitchen but... I have a dog and not sure how he will do on the wood stairs. What would you do?

I would add some type of carpet to the stairs, a dog on wood stairs is asking for a hurt dog IMHO

I agree, that’s what worries me but if we do the wood in both rooms would you still carpet thr Steps?

am unsure how to advise you on adding space without seeing a floor plan or at least photos of other sides of the house. As far as updating the exterior the first thing I would suggest is replacing the columns at the entry. They are undersized and really aren't appropriate. The brick looks good enough that I wouldn't advise painting it. It provides a nice contrast to the siding. I would suggest replacing the garage door with one that has character. Would suggest installing one that has windows or lites in the upper portion. Garage doors with windows do more to alleviate a flat facade and give the house more depth. Good luck!

When was the house built and in what state? Did you later create the basement bedrooms with a building permit? What year were they added? If the windows were legal when the bedrooms were created, they are still legal. I've not heard of a sill height requirement greater than 44". That requirement goes back to the mid 80's. Passage for emergency escape and rescue through another space can be difficult. Show a diagram with rough dimensions. Remember, this bedroom window requirement is not only for emergency escape but recuse by the fire department and they like to enter the bedroom directly. Be aware that the minimum opening requirement for the lowest level is smaller (usually 5 s.f. instead of 5.7 s.f. but check for local amendments).

Multi-zone mini split; what will happen if piping only is switched?

Wondering what will happen if on a muntil zone mini-split. the electrical is hooked up correctly to the A & B interior head units, but by accident the copper liquit/gas piping is switched. So the piping that should be going from outside condensor A is actually going to inside head unit B, yet the electircal is correct. Will the unit power and and function or will there be an error code?

We put ductless mini splits into our last existing home which was a 1950's Cape Cod (read no attic) they were able to do it without any holes into the ceiling or walls. You will want to talk to a company who installs these they are good at fitting them into existing homes.

Some dogs have no problem using wood stairs. If you are worried about yours, a runner (on the stairs) between floors is perfectly acceptable,

I would just install a stair runner on the 5 steps. Looks nice and problem solved.

he is crazy and doesn't know how to walk he runs and he's already had one knee fixed just wasn't sure if the rug on the steps only would look ok. thank you!

A runner on the steps will look fine. Since he's 'crazy' I'd also put a washable, latex-backed rug at the top and bottom of the stairs.

You can also add just strips of carpet on each stair as shown here.
