LVP used vertically in wet-room and shower walls

Advice on using LVP on a European like wet bathroom. I am planning a new bath, with a zero-edge walk-in shower. I have seen an LVP-like material, glued to the traditionally waterproofed wall, with silicone between joints. I am planning on a solid surface shower pan. I am planning on using industrial thickness (12-20 mm). Opinions?

To my knowledge, vinyl flooring isn’t suitable for places exposed to prolonged moisture (like shower walls), nor for vertical application. If you want that look, why not use porcelain tile?

Ok, In Tn., In order to be a licensed contractor, we have to be bonded. This is like an insurance policy for just such an occasion. If I have a client that I mess up, and am not willing to repair to industry standards, the homeowner can go downtown to the codes dept and report. Once codes looks at it and the contractor still won't make it right, you can "call on his bond" they will give you the amount to fix it with someone else, and he can't pull permits until he pays the bond back. Since this is a tile/tub replacement, the contractor probably does not have a permit on it. That's ok, since it's torn out anyway, they will be able to see the water pipes. So don't let that stop you. Please keep us updated! Please remember folks, make sure that your contractor is licensed, bonded and insured. Mistakes happen, we are all only human. What's makes a good contractor is how they handle it when an issue does come up.

Actually, we would generally run the waterproofing throughout bath floor and up 3-6" on bath walls, but every situation is different. Local codes also come into play. 36" is generally considered the minimum length for curbless. Ability to achieve proper slope is critical. Choice of tile can come into play for ease of slope. The attached article is a good overview. The TCNA 2018-19 Handbook is also a good reference. Hopefully your tile contractor is familiar. Specifically they should reference guideline B421C-18. Regarding waterproofing, the guidelines indicate "..also the floor and wall waterproofing must continue outside the immediate shower area one foot beyond the high point of the floor, but not beyond the tiled area. Additional waterproofing of floor and/or walls outside the shower area may be needed to effectively contain and evacuate shower water and splash ...When additional waterproofing of floor and/or walls outside the shower area is desired or required, the building design professional must specify all areas to be waterproofed and indicated membrane termination points". It also references the use of a secondary drain outside the shower area "when required or desired". I agree its going to take a few more days and that fans should be used. If the leak has been resolved, you shouldn't have another issue. It's just a shame that access had to be gained through a living room wall.I've just this month had a wall repaired that was cut into for the same reason. Luckily, it was the back wall of my foyer coat closet, with the tiled guest bath's shower on the other side. My carpenter was able to 'picture frame' a piece of new drywall and leave it screwed into place where it can be removed for the plumber in the future if needed. Painted and inside a closet it looks planned - of course it wouldn't have worked in my living room.

Well IMO wet rooms are a lot of work for little benefit I think they belong in the tropics in teeny little bathrooms . I agree that controls are nice where you can reach in an adjust the water without getting wet but its your wet room and if you want the controls in a certain place get it done now.

You would think. I have been doing my research because I am looking for a particular 'look'. I came across this product. I do not know how it is different than LVP.

That linked product is not tiles. It’s a large laminated surface. Lvp is tiles or planks. 12 inches by 24 inches is a common size. The linked product would cover an entire wall. or whatever size you cut it to. Grout lines are just printed not real.

It’s more like linoleum than lvp if you are looking for a flooring analogy.

I can’t help you with the question about that product. unfortunately

I think I am going with a solid surface versus subway tile with dark grey grout. Opinion?

My dad (a contractor) used to say 'the hardest, and cheapest thing to do is plan...once you start opening up walls, things get expensive." I am in the planning and permitting stage of a 500 sq ft garage conversion.

Liz Osborne, if what you are after is a no/minimal grout situation, there are a couple options out there now that are fairly new. 1. is very large format porcelain these things come huge 4x4 I have seen 5 x 10 and they are not cheap but they are beautiful and you can abut the joints for minimal grout. I would still do waterproofing behind cause things can happen. Next 2, I saw there is a place in Miami that is selling a wall paper type product that is installed in showers. I have been to the web site and they have infinite pictures for a feature wall. It is a printed vinyl type. If you are after a wood plank look then I agree with the others that there are some really pretty ones out on the market now that you literally have to touch to see if they are real wood or not.
