Please make my decision for me... single or double sink
Comments (40)My sink is the Ticor S405D and fits in a 36" sink base with no modifications. However, most of my cabinets, including the sink base, have 1/2" walls, not 3/4", so that may be why no mods were necessary. Others have had to modify their 36" sink bases by scribing the sides a bit, but it wasn't a big deal (at least that's what they said). We also prefer a double-bowl...and we also have a prep sink! Based on Shelly_K's description of how she works & uses a sink, I think she will be happier with a double-bowl sink. Here's a pic: And the specs... Dimensions: Overall: 35-1/8" x 20-7/8" x 9" Large Bowl: 21-3/8" x 18-3/4" x 9" Small Bowl: 10-1/2" x 15-7/8" x 7" It's a 70/30 sink. We went from equal-sized bowls in our old kitchen, which we hated, to this, which my DH, in particular loves (he does most of the cleanup). He thinks the sink is one of the best things about our new kitchen. My largest cookie sheets, roasting pan, and refrigerator shelves & bins all fit in the large bowl. I understand that some people have very large pans, cookie sheets, etc. and may need a bigger bowl, but it really depends on what you have/need, not what others have/need....See MoreNeed Help with Sink Decision - Blanco vs Elkay
Comments (5)Misslivvy - Both Blanco and Elkay are very well established companies that stand behind their products. Knowing that's the case, there are three specific things I would want if it were my sink. #1 - A noisy sink (from running water or the clattering of dishes) bugs me, so I'd want to know what's on the underside of the sink to absorb the sound. #2 - I once broke a wine glass when it fell over in my old sink. That's when I found out the hard way the not all stainless steel sinks have perfectly flat bottoms. The angle on the bottom of my sink made it impossible for my good wine glasses to stand upright. Won't make that mistake again. #3 - This isn't a big deal to everyone, but for me, I like to know I'm spending on products that are made in America. Here are links to the spec sheets on the 2 specifc models you mentioned. The Elkay sink says it has their sound-deadening material on the underside, but the Blanco spec doesn't mention sound deadening so I'm not sure what it has. Both spec sheets show side view diagrams. Looks like both have a bit of an angle to the bottom, but the Blanco sink is definitely drawn so that it doesn't look as level as the Elkay. Finally, the Elkay spec sheet does say this model is Made in USA, but the Blanco spec doesn't say where it was made. I'd go with the Elkay. Hope this helps. Good luck. http://www.elkayusa.com/cps/rde/xbcr/elkay/01-110G_ELU(H)2816.pdf http://www.blancoamerica.com/inter/kt/HeilerPPMKatalog/hlr-system/USA/Sinks_Bowls/BLANCOSTELLAR_Super_Single_Bowl/Spec_Page/441024.pdf...See MoreMy Old World Kitchen - Need Help with New Project! MANY Questions!
Comments (32)Take a look here, this transformation is perfect for your son's kitchen. http://www.remodelaholic.com/update-builder-grade-cabinets/ Other suggestions- 1) find someone like Trebuchet to change out your double sink for a large single sink (perhaps the same manufacturer will have one that perfectly fits the existing cutout). 2) add pullouts to your base cabinets. Ideally change them to drawers with new drawer fronts that match. 3) change stove to slide in style with stainless hood. The counter is beautiful and likely cost at least $4k installed. Not worth changing if it is not his forever home. I love my sink on the peninsula, and do think it would work well for you if the space between the arms of your "U" is about between 5- 5 1/2 feet, but changing that is not within the possibility of your budget. I like the wood flooring but that decision can be deferred if you are not changing the cabinet layout. Also the upper cabinet opening from the center over the peninsula sometimes works in in these older kitchens because the hinges allow complete 180 degree swing. In my kitchen, I deliberately added inset pin hinges to my cabinets in that location to get the 180 degree swing, and tested my reach physically so that the contents could be easily accessed. I have hidden Euro hinges with soft close on the rest of my uppers, but they only open 135 degrees. I will bet that even here at GW, nobody has ever noticed that my hinges are different in that location (benjesbride kindly linked my reveal above, the pin hinges are on the mirrored upper cabinets over the peninsula). Comments (177)Oh that's okay....Sometimes I'm looking on CL and I know we have the same vibe going on. I think you're right though----dfw seems to have better stuff. Maybe due to the floods down there? The sofa I showed above is on my CL. I like the table and that's the idea on CL...you need to know the area and check out the what the house looks like in the listing pics. It's part luck, part detective work :) Nice houses usually have good stuff. I had the same trouble with my coffee table...my table is too low (it's from the 70's and they just were that way, I think) and too short. But I like it and there are no decor police. Also, it might be considered a tea table, which have always been higher (closer to end-table height).....See MoreVivdripper
