Nursery Curtain Help

Hello!

I would like to hang black out curtains in our baby's nursery to block out excessive light. However the window is right in corner of the room with curve of the window above the blinds. Would it look odd to have the curtain rod above the whole window plus there is only approximately 3 inches from the edge of the widow to the corner which does not leave much room for any type of decorative ends on the curtain rod. Any suggestions much appreciated!

Given space limitations on both sides of window & the fan window above, the only idea that comes to mind is an at ceiling height mounted black out roller shade - maybe a decorative Roman shade type. It should extend past the window to corner of wall & same amount on crib sideboard prevent light seepage at sides.. The big deal will be to not have a cord anywhere near crib so maybe a motorized shade or if cost prohibitive then cord must be on wall side & length must be somehow controlled or cord must be mounted or secured to wall in case baby is ever playing in this room & could potentially reach cord.

Another thought - rearrange room to create space on left of window. Then mount drape pole at ceiling height & when open have drapery panel stack completely off window at left. Again, secure any cords for safety.

I know this is an old post but I wanted to comment and also hear back from the OP to see what she came up with. I immediately thought about "remove the closet door and hang a curtain" b/c this is what I did first with my nursery. Any door takes up 3x3 feet of space so it's a no brainer - get rid of the door. I use a tension rod for my curtain - made it from a cute piece of fabric that was on sale. The second thought I had was to rearrange the "sections" of the room. I would move the crib and rocking chair to the right of the entry door - by the window area. And then move the dresser and shelf to the left side, next to or opposite the closet. The reason is: there is probably more movement in front of dresser/shelf than in front of crib. You just get the kid in and out of crib, and then sit in the rocking chair. But with the new arrangement, you can let the toddler play in the open area on the left.

Those baby animal printables are sooooo cute! In the end I didn’t want to stick to one theme or the other and I found myself drawn to slightly educational prints so I ended up with these from Pictureta on Etsy (note: actually I kinda wanted a pond/lake theme but it was super hard to find stuff for that). I know myself and know that anything beyond taping a poster into a frame is not going to fly with my energy level. I have fabric samples sitting in my office that have been waiting to be made into a mobile for the past six months. I like how the map below is more or less than equal area projection instead of the traditional Mercator.

I think the rod should be about 4 feet wide gives you about 6 inches on each side so you can pull curtains to the side. One curtain could work if it was wide enough (4' if you go with that rod size) but would not look good IMO. If you are leaving that shade in the window you could maybe go with a dark grey or dark blue curtain instead of a black out and it would still darken. for height you have to figure how much space is below the window and account for the rod being mounted higher than the window. guessing from the picture you will probably need 95" inch long curtains

I think a blackout roller blind and some nice drapes would be good there are literally 1000s of decals for walls and the nice thing is they removeable as the child grows. You will need more storage for sure . A chair is always nice for feeding and reading a book later .I like a chair with no moving parts since toddlers get into lots of trouble. Get a nice foot stool with the chair.A fun light fixture and a lamp so that you can have just soft lighting in the middle of the night.As the baby gets older a book shelf a low one is a good idea attached to the wall.Toy storage . A mobile above the change table .

I’d just close the blinds during nap time and let baby learn to sleep in any light condition. Makes going places and traveling easier if baby doesn’t need complete darkness to sleep. Not being critical- I did this and now my daughter does same.

I do see blinds advertised as room darkening but don’t know much about them.

You could also have a decorative half-circle panel made for top of window above blind and hang short room darkening curtains that the rod is just attached to window frame.

Darker rooms promote better sleep for everyone. Babies also get better quality sleep when they're not moving around. You do you, mama, and if you want blackout curtains, go for it. You will need to rearrange your furniture, though. Not sure why you have a pack and play and a crib in there but if you add curtains you'll want them out of baby's reach (same with that name banner). Maybe swap your crib & changing table. Back to your question - we mounted a curtain rod wall-to-wall to cover up the wall behind our TV. Yes, you need to remove the decorative end, but your baby won't care. Place the rod halfway between the top of the curved window & your ceiling (or higher if your curtains are longer) and leave off the decorative end. Agree with pulling the curtains off to the left side so you don't block light when they're open.
