With the contemporary style bed, I think a monochromatic look would be very cool. Linens a touch paler than the walls, or white, or some combination of that. Then you could do just one thing, such as a small bolster on the bed, in a surprise color like tangerine, deep aqua or raspberry.

I know you two love it today. Take a tip from an old lady…don’t buy a set of anything. Pick some of the pieces (not the headboard). Let’s say you go with the bureau and the bedside tables. Now you look for a bed…think about a different headboard and a different shaped mirror over the bureau. For example: this is one is leather…same color tone, but different texture: Then a wow color on the walls which works with the taupes and blacks:

Pictures would help Is the cream around the fireplace the same as the cream moldings and built ins? A blue gray is going to make the cream even more yellow, but a green gray may work. It will really depend on the blues and creams that are already in the room.

UPDATE: Thank you, everyone, for all your help!! I mostly went shopping in my house, and changed things up a bit: 1. moved in blue-ish rug from desk area; got rid of ugly beige ombre rug 2. moved in dining room chair I wasn't using anyway; it's not awesome but it's better than the folding chair ;) and my mom made the quilt when I was a teenager, so... 3. moved in blue blanket from den 4. framed/hung watercolors my MIL gave me for Christmas -- not exactly what had been envisioning, but I love them and they are free ;) 5. new: big monstera plant from Trader Joe's of all places; it surprisingly seems pretty happy here 6. new: blue and white duvet cover (Overstock); blue bedskirt (Macy's); blue geometric pillow (HomeGoods) Eventually it would be nice to add an upholstered bench under the pics, and get bigger bedside tables + lamps -- but I don't want to spend the $$ on that right now. Overall, I'm happy with the room, and appreciated all the suggestions!
