Do you need the 12 inches of space? For storage? You can technically have the cutout in the cabinet instead of the overhang. But I think I would cut back the island 12”

Totally depends if a smaller island will work for you and your family. Will making the island smaller impact seating? Will there be a sink or other appliance in the island? Would advise you to just think about the functionality. As I advise others you can always assemble a mock up of you island with cardboard boxes to help you understand what size will serve you best. overhang at 15 in to allow seating means 39 in depth. yours is 48 in depth??? you have a reason for that??? 10 feet reduced to 9 feet..is that the issue? means 3 to 4 stools across back...maybe a stool pitched at corner a bit if templating allows a not severe corner..... did you want the five stools that 10 feet would allow ....I think 3 to 4 is better but I dont have a crowd of five very often ...even if I did I don't think lining up in a row is what people like to do. Or do you have work only island full depth front and backside and no seating/no overhang ?? ......certainly thats a lot of storage so 12 in reduction doesn't seem a hardship.

2.5" burns a lot of material. Most mitered edges are 1.5" (approx 4cm) using a 2cm thick stone. If the home is new and the neighborhood standard is oversized mitered edges, that is a consideration but not a requirement. Many use 3cm stone without adding a mitered edge.

Looks like there is plenty of depth for seating and overhang, but the length is your challenge. Overhang standard in our market is approx 12" for this height needing 60" + edges overall for a 48" island. We will reduce the depth of the backside cabinets when needed.

IMO unless the kitchen design ctries for a 2.5” thinck counter I would do 3CM thick material and be done. I think counter space always wins

Have you seen that fabricator make mitered edges with quartzite? Lots of sad quartzite miters on here... 3cm eased edge always looks good.

What is the overall look you want to achieve? Transitional? Much more modern?

Does the fabricator have the skill to do a larger mitered edge that looks good?

How careful are you as a family in working around the kitchen? Have you chipped counter edges before in your previous kitchens? I never have, but we've seen plenty of photos of chipped edges on the forums.

Thanks all.. lots of good information. I am leaning towards a regular eased edge and keeping the size. Can't go wrong with a large island. @chispa It's just going to be 2 of us in the house for the most part unless the kids come to visit :) I'm not concerned about chipped edges. I also think it's a 3cm if I'm not mistaken. @megs1030 thank you. I absolutely loved it.

I don't think you can go wrong with the eased edge and full size island. Will probably be cheaper to fabricate too ... use that money towards something else!

Bigger is better! I just put a similar quartzite in for my island and I love the color! My island is 116 X 78

Teri, is that a retractable TV in your island? Does it have a quartzite top that plugs the hole when the TV is lowered? Hadn't seen that done on an island before!

Yes. It’s a pop up tv. The quartzite for the top hasn’t been installed yet but it will be. The expense is a pop up that rotates - if you get one that doesn’t rotate it’s not too expensive. They sell these stands for RVs and boats. I loved the idea for the island and it faces the table that doesn’t have a view of any other TV.

Teri is that Ijen Blue?? We were considering that one as well. Did you use it through the whole kitchen or just the island? I need to find something for the perimeter. I am only using mine on the island.

It is Beverly Blue. Ijen is brighter.
