Need living room help for NYC apt! (lots of photos!)
Comments (90)Walnutcreek, what a cool lamp! Somehow I'm really seeing that on a buffet or a console table. It would be gorgeous! Suero, that table is lovely. You're right, it's way more than I want to spend, but it's absolutely beautiful, as are all the other things on their web site. I like all the choices of woods and finishes too. Well, the budget's a problem. As is my lack of ability to make a decision. I'm currently stuck between the West Elm nesting coffee table paired with the Ethan Allen end table with drawer; and the Crate & Barrel Sims coffee table & matching end table. (For the second end table in either case, I'm going with that little orange metal table.) I think the wood on the Crate & Barrel tables is much nicer, but the tables themselves are a little boring; in addition the West Elm + Ethan Allen (gads, how many people pair *those* brands together?!) are more practical since they give me a drawer and a de facto shelf or two. Have read not such good things about West Elm quality - not sure if that applies to this table, which is constructed differently from their usual furniture. And it irritates me that I'd have to pay $70 in shipping, for this table!!! (And it doesn't even come assembled!) I don't know - there's the style thing. Maybe I just don't know who I am. I want to project a slightly funkier image than what I think I'm coming up with... maybe it's the carpeting that's the problem. The carpet ain't funky. And the funky furniture on top of the carpet just don't go. The furniture that goes with the carpet ain't so funky. I am *not* a fuddy-duddy! I'm NOT!!! (Or am I???)...See MoreYellow living room with red?
Comments (16)No pics, but my living room is a yellow tone. Kind of a buttery yellow, maybe a bit warmer. Not too dark. I wouldn't have picked it for that room, but I have a sort of semi-open concept kitchen/living room and this is the kitchen color, so I continued it into the living room... I may still change it. In any case, the room has a large wall hanging I bought in Australia - it's predominantly sort of a tomato red (maybe slightly more toned down that that - but a warm red) with some black, gold, and light grey. I've got two brown leather chairs, wood side tables veering into a darker tone, some natural material woven baskets in brown tones, and a couch which is almost an olive green. The coffee table is an early-mid 20th century trunk, which is a deep brown with hints of green, with leather handles. One wall (which none of the furniture just mentioned backs onto) is also almost an olive green, which I think pulls it all together. (Some people would call it an "accent" wall, but I just repainted it from the yellow when I painted a hallway an olive tone, and suddenly it looked odd not to have the color continue on this one other wall.) So in short - as seems to be the case in many of the pictures above, by bringing in browns and natural tones including the olive green (or grey-green, or whatever you want to call it) and using varied textures, my room is kept from looking like ketchup and mustard (or McDonald's, which is what I often think of when I think of those two colors.) I didn't go wild with the red - I used some throw pillows in a similar tone as the red in the wall hanging, and that's the extent of it....See Moremedium to dark brown wood choices
Comments (17)Thanks colorfast, good advise. I do plan on getting the cabinets made locally and have been to a couple of shops. I will look for alder. Because I am going with flat panel cabinets, it seems that everyone uses veneers for stability. And there are lots of choices out there for veneers, including exotic woods. I saw a veneer today that was quarter-sawn walnut, lovely warm brown colour and narrow grained, like quarter-sawn oak. I will keep looking, to see all the choices. Has anyone heard of or used a product called eco-wood? It is real wood made into veneers that look like other species of wood, ie mahogany, teak, oak, etc? It looked like a pretty good product, sustainably produced, but it feels strange to buy "fake" wood when I live in British Columbia!...See MoreNeed help with my living room! Too much brown! Comments (92)Denise, here is a link about lighting. That lamp, to me, is not appropriate for the space without having other lighting, not because of the size, but because the light doesn't point downward. It points upward/outward. It is the type of light you use for ambient lighting of the room. JMO. (Edit: I have to admit I am not a fan of torchiere-type lighting in any form at all, so this may impact my view of that particular floor lamp) Groveraxle, and others on Houzz, are much more knowledgeable in this area than I am....please read these houzz articles to start.
