Home Decorating Furniture Design Dilemma

Furnishing our new living room, please help!

We've recently moved into our new house and have no idea what to do with the arrangement of the living room. We'd like a couple of good sized sofas (or one sofa and a couple of armchairs) in the space but we're struggling to find an arrangement that doesn't impact access to the external doors.

We're currently using our old furniture and are looking to replace everything in the photos except the tv (and the cats).

Appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks!

Sectional on the full wall? Or a bigger couch and two chairs facing

Thanks! The full wall at the bottom is where the TV point is currently located. Along with the doors it has been one of the bigger issues when trying to figure out this arrangement.

I considered this arrangement as an option but it's not ideal having the tv side on with the sofas.

Hey Amberleys! You have a really lovely open space, if this was my own home I would move the sofa so that it partitions the dining room and living area, facing the french doors so that you can relax while admiring your garden. You can then place an entertainment unit or large sideboard against the wall where your sofa currently is, you can get some really pretty ones which you can place your CD's into and stereo on top. An old farmhouse display would look lovely - depends all on what kind of style you like. I would then place the playpen in the corner where your stereo is at the moment when not in use and a storage unit for toys against the same wall - Ikea have some really great units for toy storage. Hi, Lori. One can't go wrong with a sofa and two armchairs. But if you have a family, sectionals are great, too. Modern farmhouse typically incorporates wood, natural texture and a light color palette, such as below: My recommendation is to decide on your furniture lay out, then buy a rug that will define the seating area. If you would like help with furniture arrangement, we'll need measurements. Photos of all four walls are also helpful.

Hello italmover, I knew those pics would put everything in perspective! I stood on my kitchen bar to take them...yikes! I agree what you said about the two different chairs..it will looks more interesting. And that rug is great! That’s exactly what I was considering....maybe abit more navy blue? My dh says no to keeping the brown ottoman, but we shall see...methinks he is tired of brown...lol. I can see how it may tie in very nicely. The cabinetry will stay as it is built ins with the fireplace. I believe some side tables will put everything together nicely. Thank you so much for your input....you have no idea how much this is appreciated. I appreciate each and every idea...it helps me to look at my space through different eyes. 🤓

A whole home color palette doesn't mean that you will choose one color for your entire home, but like coordinating an outfit, the colors used in each room will tie that room to the rooms that are next to it. Most of us have colors we love. My sister loves fall colors, muted moss greens, orange reds and golds. I love purples, teal and reds. The idea of selecting a whole home color palette is to select a neutral color family that works with the things that you can't afford to change or don't want to change and the colors that you love (colors found in your art and décor). Then you pick a white that works well with your neutral and then you decide how and where you want to incorporate your colors. My sister's home is beautiful, but my art and belongings would not look good in her home. Her art and belongings would not look good in my home. In the home below you can see where the colors move from green to purple with a room in the middle that has both colors. They chose a white that works with both of their main colors for all the walls. This home carried the colors from the main living area into the bedrooms and bathroom using wall color.

Afraid we don't have access to another room for TV use. We're also both quite big film buffs so a decent TV set up to us is essential.

I've looked more at the idea of a 3-seater sofa and 2 arm chairs as shown in the previous arrangement and the compromise might be, as you say, an adaptable living space; where we can move chairs around to suit our needs. Not ideal though and permanent arrangement would be soo much better.

How many people do you need to seat on a regular basis?

What type of seating do those people want to sit in?

It's just me and my fiancée on a day to day. Her ideal would have been an L-shaped or chaise-end sofa but I'm struggling to get that to work in the space. I've started looking at reclining sofas or the use of footstalls as an alternative that would also allow the flexibility.

Pre-covid, we used to regularly get a group of 5-6 of us together for a movie evening. We hope to pick that up again.

Here is a general idea of what I would do.

Use small-scale furniture

Use swivel chairs.

Use ottomans for a coffee table that double as seats

Add a narrow console table behind the sofa and add chairs for extra viewing.
