Comments (3)A few comments regarding the two companies. The bulk of Arhaus Furniture is made in Conover North Carolina by Thomas Bain. Their frames used to be 5/4 hardwood but I do beleive they have switch to hardwood plywood. They do have a cut away in their stores of a chair with 8 way hand tied springs but many of their sofas have sinuous springs. They have nice cushions, good leathers and good looking styles. Restoration Hardware is made in China. I think the factory they use is called "Cozy" for some of their product line but I could be mistaken. Their literature says kiln dried hardwood frames, but as is the case with many manufacturers kiln dried hardwood is usually kiln dried hardwood plywood unless they specify that they are using 5/4 hardwood. They also say they have 8 way hand tied springs, but their are two types of 8 way tied spring systems. Those that are built into the furniture and those that are called drop in units. A drop in unit is essentially like a wire box made outside of the furniture with coil springs which can be tied in which the whole unit is then set into the frame and screwed into place. A drop in unit does not have the tortional strength of a real 8 way had tied unit. The real 8 way hand tied units have multiple layers with layers of a heavy duty material across the based and bands of metal crossing the base in a checkerboard pattern. If you want to see what a real 8 way hand tied unit looks like you could visit the Hancock and Moore website and watch their video. In as much as they do not show any construction features I suspect they are using a drop in unit and a plywood frame. In my opinion they should show some construction pictures on their web site or in their stores. If a company is using a construction system they are proud of they will usually show pictures or cutaways of what they are using. RH does have many beautiful styles. In my opinion their merchandising is second to none and they also have a nice selection of leathers and fabrics. I would say the construction methods employed by both companies are comparable. Comments (6)Room & Board products are definitely not "lower end." I often feel like that is designer-speak for "they have a showroom and thus you don't need a designer to buy it." I'm confused, meganmcdougal, by your description of Room & Board furniture as "veneer." Many of their products are solid hardwood. Just depends on the piece. They work with a variety of craftsmen, and all their products are made in the U.S. That's basically their business philosophy -- American craft. We have a Room & Board recliner, daybed, four dining chairs and two barstools, as well as a side table. All have held up quite well. Yes, the legs of the dining chairs have gotten scratched, and there's a ding in the side table. That is called "life." It is also called "American cherry," which is a softer wood and scratches more easily. As far as upholstery, I have just one word for you: ultrasuede. We have some chairs from a New England-based company called Pompanoosuc Mills that were covered in an ultrasuede and my youngest spilled GLUE on one of them last week... I didn't discover it until it dried, but after a couple of rounds of "Nature's Miracle" and some scrubbing it looks perfect. These days you can get ultrasuede in patterns -- some even have a bit of raised texture. It's a great fabric for upholstery. Let the pillows provide pattern & texture for the most part, but use ultrasuede on the expensive (big) upholstered pieces. Don't let a designer talk you into something that you don't love. You will have these items in your house longer than you think, if they're even mid-priced. My mother-in-law always says there are only two types of furniture: (1) "Walk away" furniture, that you can just leave in the house/apartment when you move, and (2) "Forever" furniture. It's a bit of an exaggeration, but her point is that when you compromise on something in between these two poles, you are likely to not really enjoy it but keep it around (because it isn't "walk away" furniture, after all)... and you will regret it. Only buy "walk away" or "forever" furniture. I would also advise you not to worry about waiting 12 weeks for the right thing. In the end, you will not remember the wait... if it's what you want....See MoreOther than Room & Board who makes the best “value” sofa?
Comments (3)With all due respect Patricia, the OP didn’t ask whether a sectional was a value buy. We are all entitled to our own opinion of what is practical or comfortable, but we don’t know this person’s seating needs or preferences. To No Thanks, which I must say is an interesting screen name for someone asking advice lol, yes you are right that two people can lounge on a sectional. And if you read through enough posts or talk to sectional lovers, you’ll discover that many people covet that corner seat. Accent pillows can sub for arm rests but I may already be preaching to the choir... So to your original question, while my husband and I are considering RB, yesterday we went to Cococo (stands for comfortable couch company) and fell in love with how comfortable their sofas are. I’ve read tons of good reviews, their pricing is in line with what we are seeing from RB, and their construction standards are satisfactory to us. There may not be a store near you but I’d say they’re worth checking out. They even have a robot in the store that allows you to do a virtual appointment with a sales rep. Their main draw seems to be Chesterfield sofas but we are looking at the Rigney which is a more contemporary look. Also their furniture is made in NC, which we consider a huge plus as some of the other popular “value” companies like Interior Define or Rove Concepts seem to be having huge fulfillment delays and their pieces are made overseas. Happy hunting!...See Morenjmomma
