Comments (14)'Pacific Fleet' is the cultivar name, Gonzer. That's the one I went gaga over too, Mike! That one's been kind of a Holy Grail plant for me and I have never found it anywhere. It is a cv. of Blue Navy Blues, and I have seen plants labeled BNB (with no cultivar name), in fact I bought one years ago hoping it would turn into the one in the picture. Nope, not even close! Very disappointing. He does say something about it being "a combination of genetics and growing conditions", so maybe it only looked like that under his conditions, although I'm not sure I buy the part about "absorbtion of minerals in the water supply". Maaaaybe........ I also don't get why he thinks 'Great Oz' is so superior to all his other hybrids. It looks like a fairly nice marmorated plant, but I'm not seeing "superclone". I have not seen that cultivar listed anywhere either, although plants labeled Emerald City seem to be fairly common. Again, the cultivar name of what's being sold as EC has somehow been lost, so it's hard to know which cultivar it is. He did say he was going to destroy all the other cvs. though, so maybe it IS 'Great Oz', but I've never been all that impressed with the ones I've seen. All of this just illustrates why cultivar names are so important. If you order a plant based on just the grex name or the names of the 2 parents, it's like buying a pig in a poke. You might think you're getting the pick of the litter, only to end up with the mutt!...See MoreJames Hardiboard Vs. Certainteed Siding
Comments (9)We used Certainteed and love it. We got the prefinished and the only difference we noticed between the two was that the warranty on the Certainteed prefinished was longer than the warranty on the Hardiboard. I believe that it was 20 or 25 yrs for certainteed vs 15 yrs for Hardiplan, but don't recall for sure. I believe that they use different prefinishing processes which is why the warranties were different. This was almost 2 years ago and things may have changed since then. We got fiber cement because we wanted to avoid woodpecker problems-our last house was natural cedar and the woodpeckers loved it. Well, on our new house the woodpecker are going after our roof! I wish that we had gotten concrete shingles too....See MoreAnyone Remember this Story?
Comments (4)I think you're referring to the husband, wife and baby who got stranded. Jim and Jennifer Stolpa (my, the Internet is fast! LOL!). They're no longer married. But there was a TV movie about their harrowing experience. She stayed in the cave with the baby, who was breast-feeding. An incident that came after that was that of James Kim, who ventured through the snow to get help for his wife and 3 daughters (I think they stayed in the car). He died of exposure and was found just a half-mile from the car, like maybe he became disoriented. Pretty sure in both of those cases there was no cellphone reception in the area (I don't even remember if the first couple had a phone with them). Which is so scary because many of us just think that if our cell is charged, we're fine in any circumstance....See MoreJames Veitch - any sources in the US?
Comments (16)Awww... that's so sweet of you both! Yes, wouldn't it be good if we could all just meet up from time to time in the same physical space! Just pop round and help each other out with our various issues, whether horticultural or technological or whatever other assorted kinds of life-ache we might be dealing with... Vape, I'm in awe of anyone who knows more than me about computers/ phones etc - which would be about 95% of the world's population by now, from what i can make out. Even barely literate people in the remotest parts of Africa and outback Australia seem to have smartphones these days and appear to know how to use them... I just missed out on that decade or two when all this stuff was developing due to illness, with major neurological issues making it impossible to grasp anything technical at all...(seriously, I could not even add 3 + 4... mainly because I no longer remembered what 3 and 4 were..) So have just been catching up, very slowly, ever since. :-)...See Morenekotish
