Help with my carpet choice!
Hey everyone. I am working on an entire house remodel and I want to carpet the stairs and the upstairs which consists of a hallway and bedrooms. The hallway will be painted in mole's breath by Farrow and Ball (very dark) with a panelled dado in Ammonite (light grey) and the ceilings in Wevet (lighter grey). The bedrooms will be a mix of purbeck stone (mid-grey), lulworth blue, and setting plaster (pink). The house style is Georgian (mid-century build with Georgian features). Other accents in the house are a touch of "Straw" by Farrow and Ball, and Railings (on the staircase balustrade for example, and on some of the woodwork in the bathroom).
So my question is: what is the best color or range of colors for the carpet, and for a family home (albeit a very elegant and well-behaved family) what material (wool, etc) should I use and what style (textured or level loop, cut pile, etc)?
The rooms will be decorated simply with lots of solids - I am not expecting to go with a highly patterned carpet - but a bit of texture in some way (through a weave or fleck for example) would be fine).

The other rooms (for the record) are a single, double, and queen bedroom.

Comments (23)bronwynsmom: I really appreciate your candor and understanding of what I'm going through. It isn't that easy an answer and you spelled out why! My FEELINGS are telling me to get a (slightly bluish)grayish carpet color (but slightly brownish too if that makes sense??) (which is a tad on the "cool" side) as it looks like it comes close to matching the grout/mortar in the fieldstone fireplace. It's possible though that the most COMPATIBLE carpet in terms of being on the same range of colors may be a normal "warm" tannish color due to my orange oak woodwork and camel colored chairs but that feels so same-ole same-ole. That's why I'm having trouble deciding which look will be better or more comfortable feeling. (I am a worry-wort by nature so if I can get a calming color scheme going I feel I might calm down too? Could this happen with color?) "Relax" might be the most applicable suggestion you make, because I'm not relaxed about it is why I think everyone in my family runs the other way when they know I'm trying to decide on a color for something... Comments (6)I have a similar paint in my LR--BM Georgian Green. Five years ago we changed our light tan carpet for Shaw Anso Nylon in Move On Up in the color Willowbrook. It's kind of a toast color with dark green and other color flecks. The room faces north and though it's darker than the previous carpet, I really like how it grounds the room and makes it feel cozy. It works great with the paint and furniture which is toast, brick red, and black. It's also very soft, as soft as Smartstrand, but I trusted nylon's wearability more than I did SS, a newer product. It never shows dirt. There are photos of it on the internet....See Morehelp with wall to wall carpet, is there any other choice??
