Comments (6)It is unfortunate that misinformation continues to be repeated about glyphosate. Denmark has not banned glyphosate, nor have "many European countries". Denmark at one point thought that some of the monitoring they were doing showed that glyphosate could move into agricultural field drainage water in autumn but once they looked at their data and related it to the methodology they used, they enacted no ban whatsoever. As the Danish Environmental Protection Agency specifically stated: http://www.egeis.org/home/main/Evaluation-GlyphosateDEPA.PDF "Against this background, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency believes that no unacceptable risk of pollution of the groundwater is associated with the currently approved agricultural use of glyphosate. The Agency thus does not consider that the updated state of our knowledge provides any technical grounds for the imposition of restrictions on the autumn application of glyphosate." Used properly, glyphosate will not pollute drinking water nor will it have adverse effects on humans. Once applied, it binds tightly to soil particles and is not herbicidally active. If it is applied to hard surfaces such as sidewalks it can move offsite of course. It can also move if there is active soil erosion carrying soil off site. It is of very low toxicity, and breaks down completely into natural constituents over time. It is of equal or lower toxicity than most household products such as detergent, soaps, shampoos, cleaners etc. and far less toxic than some of the "alternatives" often discussed such as bleach, kerosene, high strength vinegars and so on. There is so much misinformation being repeated on the web that it is difficult to get reliable information. This link provides an published overview of the available literature. How do I get rid of it???
Comments (2)It isn't crazy, but I don't think it will work. :) It is possible the odor is in the leather and it just isn't going to come out. If it were mine, I would use a leather cleaner that has some sort of scent to it. Then I would buy several bars of soap with a strong scent - Irish Spring or some nice lavender soap - and unwrap the bars of soap, put them in the bag and leave them there for a few days or a week. Or sachets sold in places like Yankee Candle company - that would give you a choice of scents. The idea is to overwhelm the current scent with a new scent....See MoreGetting rid of clothing that doesn't fit
Comments (7)Everybody's got old clothes that don't fit. That doesn't exactly mean they have to be ruined by the time factor. Some, like in my case, are pretty much intact. I suggest keeping them for the following uses: - Old clothing. Most of the times you will look for a larger rug than the almost completely useless one you already have. Things like old T-shirts make for excellent rugs. - Donation or charity. Surely there will be someone interested in that clothing. Remember that one man's trash is another man's treasure. - Heritage. The most preserved ones can be kept to be passed on from one generation to the other. - Household use. Plain clothing, suitable for filling in for those DIY materials....See MoreSide note to getting rid of bermuda-How do you get rid of Oxalis?
Comments (9)The common yellow oxalis we have here has tiny "bulbules" (sp?), which lurk 12 -18 inches under the ground. You can easily pull up the plants, of course, but those tiny bulb things stay under the soil, and up it comes again. I once had a gardener who decided to eradicate it from a flower bed which is about 12 feet long and 6 feet wide. He actually dug up the top 2 feet of soil, and sifted it by hand to get all of the tiny bulbs out. That worked for the first year, but by 2-3 years after he did that, back the oxalis came. So, being lazy, what I do is just admire it in the Spring, except where it is trying to smother other plants. Then just pull it out around those plants. By late Spring here it has died down, and I pretend it is gone. Of course, it comes up again the next Spring. It is one of our first blooming plants to bloom (starts Jan/Feb), so I just regard it as such and let it be mostly. One of my cats likes to eat it (we used to eat it as children - we called it "sour grass"). Jackie...See MoreVal B
