Would you consider painting the walls, fireplace, trim and mantel all the same color? It might unify sufaces and calm the area down.

Carpet over the new floor to hide how terribly busy it is. Cut back the ends of the mantel and slip a larger one over it, so the mantel can stand up to the heft of the stone and you don't have the formal dentil molding surrounded by such casual material. Clean up the ceiling and have it redone to a smooth finish. If you can't do that, try painting it with a flat paint. If the room is still too much, paint the stone or the walls.

Is it a wood burning Fireplace? I would install a gas insert if possible, take down mantle and trim and sheetrock over the rock wall to start.

That is a VERY BUSY FLOOR - Paint, paint and paint - everything.

large rug to hide a lot of that busy floor pattern, and then paint that entire fireplace. Don't forget to paint (or remove) that thin wood crown molding and the mantle. I'd prob remove it since you don't need anything else added to the chaos.

as for the angled panel walls, I don't understand why a less busier floor wasn't chosen. the two clash so badly.

seriously, get a large jute or sisal rug to cover what you can.

or do a solid white shaggy or flat weave rug. (to match the new paint on the stone)

then paint the rock. (you could use the light beige tone if you don't want the bright white)

try Romabio. they have diff colors:

see how they've softened the look w/all the white, pillows, and a rug? do this

make sure and do the dark joints too. paint everything

Just a regular Joe here, this room has potential! I would remove the long shelf and put up a shorter, thicker plain beam, stain it a color from the floor. Paint the walls a light color from the floor, and possibly lighten the stones with a wash, if a bed will be in there, use a plain colored spread, the throw pillows or a chair can be your accent colors. White white may be to stark for anything near this flooring, stick to light warm tones

I actually think the stone will be fine once the reddish wood is all painted over, that is the must do thing.

I very much agree with Sister Sunnie above - paint walls, fireplace, door and window trim the same color (something in the white family). That should go a long way toward unifying the space. The floor is so heavily patterned that it provides enough interest. The built-ins suggested are also a great idea and will eliminate some of the heavy stone. There is a technique called "German smear" that you might want to try on the fireplace. That might work a bit better than simply painting. Here is an example.
