Backsplashing subway tile, uneven countertops.

So we have run into a problem. The space where the stove goes we need to place a backer board to continue the subway tile across. The problem is the countertop on the right of the stove is higher than the left countertop. How do we go about making this as even as possible?

I think the problem here is it sounds like the base wall is lath and plaster. Removing ONLY the part between the counter top and cabinets is a bit of a challenge. If it were sheet rock it would be a "no brainer" to remove. That is probably the reason why previous owners did such a patch job on the wall in the first place. I'd look into removing any wood and replacing that with sheetrock, then using the proper sheet rock mud or plaster, filling in all and giving it a good skim coat. That is what I would do so it could be painted, I would not even try to tile over the patch job you described. Like Bill pointed out, you are unlikely to end up with a flat enough surface to get a good tile job unless you use very small tiles. While you volunteered to set tiles, is repairing/rebuilding the wall something you even want to deal with? For me, setting the tiles is always the easy part of the job - in remodeling projects, preparing the surface so it is suitable to put tiles on is usually were all the work is.

I'm in the same boat. We just installed upper cabinets on our old house and soon discovered the ceiling is about 3" lower on a 12' span. We of course leveled the cabinets and plan on putting a custom cut trim piece at the top. It's not going to be perfect, but our cabinets and walls are all white so it won't look TOO bad. Fast forward to the new problem. We installed 40" tall cabinets and in order to get our mixer under the run, we had to tweak the uppers to move them up a smidge. This is the fourth time we've rehung these cabinets!!! We thought about purchasing 3 new 30" tall boxes, but don't want to lose the storage space we desparately need! Anyhow, we're planning a 1x1" small glass tile backsplash and there is now about 3/4" of height difference in the 8' run. We planned on starting on the counter (which is level) and then moving up so we could hide the slanted cut tiles under the cabinets. The problem is that will ALSO put those slanted tiles right under the vent hood, front and center and very visible. Putting quarter round between the vent bottom and the backsplash is an option, but I think it will still be visible. So now time to vote. Uneven at the bottom or uneven at the top? Or maybe a little at the top and a little at the bottom. We have 15" deep upper cabinets with about 17" between the counter top and the bottom of the cabinets. (we have low ceilings in our house) Any thoughts about possibly running the tile at a 45 degree angle?

You know bad work when you see it - and this is it! Upon arrival and finding out he was doing glass tiles, why did he not leave to get the proper cutting tools? Red flag. And yes, typically there are spacers, and tiles are set before grouting, so you could have been consulted about placement etc, and inspected prior to grouting. Another red flag. Someone who complains when they do work in your home, isn't going to do a good job. Yet another red flag. I learned the hard way in doing home renovations if you don't speak up, people try to get away with a lot, or won't do work up to your standards - unless you have a great general contractor who shares your same high standards. I think as the homeowner you have to be proactive; you always have to inspect and ask questions, during the job and definitely before you pay anything - or hold out a certain percentage until you inspect finished work. I guess you can try and dispute the payment, if you used a credit card and then request that the contractor to remedy the situation. Of if you paid the big box store, dispute the charge with them until you get satisfaction. Keep going up the food chain! I've heard so many bad stories about big box store work, tough lesson. I hope you get it resolved. Keep us posted.

You raise or lower the easiest countertop. Who set your cabinets please? Rookie mistake. Leveled each side but didn't put the level in an "X" fashion over the appliance opening.

What do you mean by ”backer board?”

It's like a bathtub. You find the low point and cut the bottom of all the first row of tile so that top of first row is level.

Joseph any actual advice then? Cabinets and countertops were already installed. We just need to get this done and today. And I want to make it look as good as we can

Bathtub surrounds are tiled with the bottom course cut to adjust for out of level and high/low spots every day and no one notices. I'm looking at one now. Or you can remove and replace your counters as has been suggested.

I would take my time, and not rush and get those cabinets level. If it involves removing a section of countertop, I would have the countertop people come and do that. Have you put a level on the other side. Is it possibly, not level, and thats why the right side is 1/4 higher? If not, then the right side needs to be removed and made to be level with the left side. It is something you will notice forever, if you dont do it right.

I would make the bottom even and make up the difference at the top. You don’t notice the top directly under the cabinet.

^^^ Not sure how that makes sense.

What kind of range is that? If it’s a slide-in that rests on the counters then you’ve got that to contend with also.

Unless both left and right counters round the bend making it a major job, I’d be correcting it.
