Master closet - blank slate - need help w/design ideas

Hello Houzz-friends,

Some may be familiar with my posts about different home renovations for a house that we are planning on moving into (someday soon, hopefully).

This is the current master closet situation (minus the carpet - which is gone). I'm including the blueprint for the room because it is the largest, emptiest, blank(est) closet I've ever seen and we don't have a clue where to start.

We are simple - very few clothes and all of our shoes fit into one laundry basket.

I was thinking about putting a laundry set up on the far side? built in's? New lighting? Paint?

It's HUGE - have at it - I'm open to all ideas

IMO the whole master is over the top size wise and I would never have laundry in my closet . Of course it is blank looking there are no clothes in it. IMO you need a closet design company to design what you need but IMO if resale is ever in your future that closet size IMO would be a huge turn on for most women for sure. I have about 80 pairs of shoes at the moment after getting rid of about 1/2 of mine so that closet would be heaven . I believe the size of the closet is perfect for the rest of the suite size . I happen to love main floor laundry since running up and down the stairs to load and unload is a PITA.

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas! It looks like the consensus is to put the shower at the end, that was our thought too. Our best layout idea was similar to williamsem's but I was concerned that it would feel small blocking off the toilet, but we do want the toilet a concealed a bit. I like Lotteryticket's layout, we don't want to feel like you are walking into the toilet and I think that a storage tower would definitely help with that. I also like Karenseb's idea, tons of storage!! But with only 4 feet between the two vanities do you think we would be bumping butts if we were brushing our teeth at the same time? As far as skylights go, we are doing this project ourselves and we have engineered trusses, we could probably tackle skylights but haven't thought too much about it. It would be nice to get some additional natural light in there, definitely something for us to investigate. A little off topic but, what are your thoughts on heated floors? We live in south-eastern Michigan and are considering heated floors but I'm concerned that it will be a waste of money. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The only potential 'problem' I see with the corner range...is backing into the corner of that island, when you need to take something out of the oven. That isn't a problem with the Candice Olson kitchen, because it's a table placed further away, not an island. You have some great alternatives, already...in fact, the only option I haven't seen is the main sink on the island. I'm not sure how much you can 'move into' the dining area, but if you could add a few feet (and another window) something like this might work. Keep the pantry and fridge as is and move the range to the 'sink wall' with the sink/dishwasher and trash on the island. You would still have the stools and easy access to the dining area...just another idea. Lots of natural stone can have green flecks or striations (sp?). You're right about not needing a sideboard or cabinet in that area. I was confused by your post. I wouldn't match the furnishings, they should complement one another but not all one matching set. I like the wood table. Looks a bit like weathered barn board colour. Is there enough space for something that big? They style and colour will look good with the beadboard on the walls. Instead of getting a matching sofa / loveseat combo, you may one to do a sofa and some chairs. It's hard to tell from the pictures but it would look like it would be a tight fit with both. Also putting chairs instead of loveseat gives you the option to do some coloured or patterned chairs. I love the idea of yellow, but I am biased. I love fall colours and tend to gravitate towards them. Yellows, reds, greens would all look great with rustic furniture. Definitely nothing frilly on those windows. I'm sure someone could help you out with styling them, I've never had tall windows like that so not sure where you'd put them when you have windows over the fireplace. Perhaps just shades with simple sheer drapes that run on the bottom windows only. Sheers can be coloured if you like, don't have to be white. Or you could just leave them completely bare. Trim is very easy to paint. Tape off where you don't want paint going and prime it and paint it. You may need two coats of primer. They also make a plastic product that you place on the floor when painting. It slips under the baseboard and you move it along as you paint so paint doesn't get on your floor. I've used it in the past and it worked well. So since you own some artwork already that's actually a great jumping off point for you. What I would do is figure out where you want the art and then use the colours from those peices as your accent colour or finding a complementary wall colour. Grab a bunch of paint samples that you think you'd like and compare them next to the art.

Congratulations on building your new home. Based on our experience here are a few things you should look into: 1) Whether your shed (accessory building) is allowed in your zoning code. 2) The maximum sq ft of the accessory building that is allowed. 3) How far does it need to be setback from your property line. This varies between municipalities. 4) Make sure your Crabapple tree (Malus spp). is going to do well in your plant hardiness zone. http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/ 5) Regarding the shrubs, in our planting designs we try to only specify plants that are native to the state and region, because of reduced irrigation and maintenance needs. In looking at your pictures, we think that the swale should be usable space for recreation and repose. The trees can be located near the deck for privacy purposes; we recommend planting mature trees (large gallon size) because of higher survivability rates. If you are using the Crabapple tree for privacy, take into account that their canopy range is between 10'-25' diameter depending on the species. Also keep in mind that Crabapple is deciduous, which means you may want to consider a mix of deciduous and coniferous (evergreen). Lastly, we think you should cluster your plantings along the edges of the sides of the property (not in front of the swale); this would make your back yard look bigger. That’s massive. Is it possible to cut the closet in half so that you enter the laundry room between the shower and toilet? The remainder sounds like it would be fine for your (anyone’s) needs.

I think “laundry” may need to be defined. Are we talking hamper for dirty clothes or full wash/dry/fold laundry area?

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - raised 4 kids in a house that could fit into the basement of this one - so I totally agree about it being over the top in size. I do think that a closet company would make it a good investment, especially for resale, but I'm looking to create a design that I can have our contractor build - one of the carpenters on his team is exceptionally good. If I have a plan - they will make it happen.

@ker9 - the main floor has a full laundry room. What I'm thinking about would be for sheets and towels. At least, that's my thought.

@emilyam819 I hadn't thought of that. I'd need to mark off the remaining size of closet space to see how much shelf space there would be usable on the left side. Although I agree with Patricia that the larger closet would add to resale one day.

Are you interested in moving or installing additional plumbing? Sounds like the two of you could be happy with an armoire in the bedroom for your clothing/shoes. Here are two other spots where a stacking W/D for upstairs dirties could work. Leave the huge closet for your storage needs and it will still be in tact for the next owners.

Are you going to hang out upstairs while you wash/dry/fold the upstairs laundry and then hang out downstairs while the other laundry is done?

Check out IKEA’s website. You can design your closet to meet your needs there and then have your contractor build it for you. Good luck!

closet company. when I redid my master, I splurged on the California Closets. They did a beautiful job. (I added the leopard carpet and the quartz counter after they were done)

this was it when we were framing. 7x11 I think? doesn't look that big.

The designer comes out and looks at your clothes and asks about your style and wardrobe. then she designs it tailored to you. My husband has his own closet in what used to be the old shower/bathroom. This new one is all mine! lol. totally worth hit.

could you do a window? not sure about having laundry in there. I don't think I'd like that.

if you have extra room, what about linens or suitcases?

No laundry in the closet.....you don’t want the humidity or heat to ruin your clothes. The addition of the necessary plumbing can get expensive, too. Your closet is large enough to hold all your hanging clothes, a dresser, shelves for shoes and handbags, and three hampers for sorting dirty items: darks, whites and lights, plus an extra hamper for dry cleaner items. I’d love that closet.

How about a chaise lounge? You can lay tomorrow’s outfit out on it, sit on it to put on your socks, or have someone sit on it while you chat and pick out clothes.
