Strawberry Plants/Runners Season Wrap Up - Winterizing Suggestion
Comments (6)Veggie: 1. Did the runners you stuck in the dirt root or not? I assume you know that they root beneath the rosette of leaves at the end of a runner. If there are roots under these new rosettes, you can remove the rest of the runner completely, and you will have a stand-alone plant. If you buried the runners before leaf rosettes formed, you may have prevented the formation of new plants. 2. You don't really winterize containerized strawberries. You move them to a location, such as a garage, shed, or basement, where the roots and the soil will not freeze solid. There is no need to do this until night temperatures fall significantly below freezing, and stay that way. Let the plants go dormant outdoors before moving them into a protected area, which should not be warm enough to break them out of dormancy. Put them back outdoors when temperatures are just creeping back up to 30 degrees or so. Strawberries are tough, and can stand a lot of cold, but they can't be allowed to freeze solid. 3. It is normal for strawberry leaves to die and turn brown as the plant enters dormancy. You can remove them if you like. The important thing is to keep the roots and crown healthy, and protect them from a very hard freeze. 4. It is difficult to keep the same containerized strawberry plants going for years. At least every two years, you should dump out and renew the soil, and replant the younger, more vigorous plants. Do this in very early spring, before the plants come out of dormancy. Throw out plants that have elongated crowns and have been around for two years or more, since their berry production and size will decline substantially. 5. Did you get any strawberries this past season, and what type of strawberry are you growing? Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA...See MorePostage , Christmas Cards & wrapping paper
Comments (15)1. Send as many e-cards as possible. There are some really cute interactive ones that are great for families with small kids. I make copies of an old family photo to send to all the adult nieces/nephews and our siblings. I send it in a Christmas/Holiday photo card. That's their gift from us. Over the years I've sent out all the ancestoral grand-, great-grand parents, etc. going back several generations, along with information about the subject/s in the photo. 2. Get the end-of-the roll newsprint (paper used for newspapers) from your local newspaper (free/cheap) and use it for gift wrap. I tie them with inexpensive twine, rather than expensive ribbon/bows for a country/rustic look. Have the kids decorate the paper if you need a craft project for them. 3. I also make my own gift bags. You can make them any size you need using most kinds of sturdy paper. The trick is finding a box the size you need to use as the form to make them. HOW TO: A. Using a large box that cereal came in, take your paper and wrap the cereal box - all but the top (try to make the seam at the back of the bag, not the side). DO NOT stick anything TO the box - it's just a form. B. Use a glue stick and/or double stick tape at the seams and bottom. C. Leave the top of the box you are using as a form open so that you can reach in and have something to hold onto when you pull the box out of the bag. D. Finish the bag by cutting the top edge (if it needs evened out) - you can use fancy cut scissors or pinking shears, if you have some. Fold the top edge into the inside and glue down using a glue stick. You can fold it over twice if you are going to attach ties/handles. E. You can add ties/handles using twine, ribbon, yarn, etc. by using a hole punch and making 4 holes (two on each of the long sides) about 3-4-inches apart and thread the twine, ribbon, yarn, etc. through the holes to secure the top closed. F. Crease the sides in the center to resemble a regular paper gift bag. 4. Another easy gift bag can be made out of brown paper lunch bags (you can also find them in colors or out of decorative paper). Secure the top by folding over 2-inches or so, punch two holes through all layers of the folded down area, and secure with twine, ribbon, yarn, etc. You can decorate these with all kinds of things, or leave them plain. We set a $10 gift limit for immediate family (kids/grandkid), but spend more on them for their birthdays. It's easier to budget this way. Hubby and I exchange one $1 gift from the Dollar Store. That's actually turned out to be a lot of fun... -Grainlady...See MoreFinally bought Christmas wrap after Christmas!
Comments (4)Best wrapping paper: Hobby Lobby! It has the lines on the back and is very heavy. They also have some beautiful papers. The rolls are big and last a long time - wait for it to be 1/2 price before you buy it though. Comments (14)I only made one mistake this year. I gave all the kids a digital frame. I bought a 2 gig memory stick for each frame. I have all their pictures and their kids pictures on the computer so for each frame I put all the pictures of them as kids for each one and a few group pictures of their kids and their cousins. I also put all the pictures that I have of just their own kids. I labeled each memory stick so I could keep them straight. After I wrapped each gift I put the appropriate stick in the box and put a tag on each gift as it was being wrapped. When I wrapped the last box I took the stick to put in the box and saw it had Robert and Shannon's name on it. Well, that could't be, because I already wrapped their gift. I didn't want to unwrap the gifts I had already wrapped so I put that stick in the gift and put the name tag on it that I thought it was supposed to go to. They all opened their gifts last Saturday anyway while they were together, so it was an easy mistake to fix. They have all called since getting the gifts to let us know how much they like the digital frames with all those family memories in them. That's quite a compliment. They have never thanked us twice for anything previously. Linda...See MoreRelated Professionals
