Help! Backsplash decision
Comments (11)I agree that a carrara (grayish/cool) would not look great with creamy/warm cabinets. I too wanted carrara but shied away because my cabinets are cream. I was considering calacatta marble subway tile, which has more gold tones. Ultimately, I decided against the marble subway tile and went with a staggered set white glass staggered set tile. My kitchen is similar to the picture attached (similar cabinets and the same backsplash and kashmir white granite). I ordered the B/S online and, other than a small sample in another pattern, never saw it before it was installed. We were away on vacation when it was installed. The problem is that since it is a glass, this tile is transparent. My contractor had painted the entire kitchen right after sheetrocking in BM coventry gray (which is a blue gray shade.) So, the B/S shows some of the underlying paint and it is a slightly lighter shade than the walls. I was livid at first but I actually really like it now. I'll post pictures soon.... Good luck with your decision!! Here is a link that might be useful: vetro stagger set tile....See MoreFinal backsplash decision Lennon granite - 3 choices - VOTE!!!
Comments (12)Hi Sauceyc, I see you got your Heath samples! I think based on the feel you want for your kitchen - beachy/funky/cool, the photos (which admittedly are hard to tell without seeing the real thing), I think you should go with the glass tiles in a colour similar to the French Gray. Somehow, I think that you are being lured by other backsplash options when you and your hubby are really feeling the glass, and it goes with the theme that you want. You just need to be able to feel confident that you've exhausted other options. Colour - I think the colour of the taupe glass tiles look like a "mistake" whereas the French Gray compliments your granite better. I think that having slight colour differences between the countertops and backsplash are okay. But I think that when you have busier, colourful granite like us, you need to pull a similar colour from the granite to tie it in, or risk everything looking too busy. Your beautiful Lennon granite has an undertone to it which seems to conflict with the taupe. See how your paint goes so well with the granite? I think you should find a glass tile that compliments your granite like your walls do. This is a glass tile we were considering. See how it "goes" with the granite so well in terms of colour? Pattern - I also wanted to comment on the pattern which you know very well, I LOVE. I know you like the running pattern of the Heath tiles and that my La Cornue ad inspired you which is great. I'll have to be honest that I'm concerned whether the pattern will work with your particular layout. The running pattern naturally "falls" from top left to bottom right, which gives a slight feeling of movement, which requires overall symmetrical cabinetry. Your range wall, while symmetrical in turns of the upper and lower cabs, has the fridge to the left which is a strong piece in stainless steel. I'm worried that it will look unbalanced...just thinking aloud here. Again, this is my two cents, I'm not a designer. Please take my opinion and consider with the others, as well as your own, because it is merely an opinion and I want YOU to feel comfortable with your decision!!! Do you have a designer you can consult with? It sounds like you feel pressured to make a decision before you're ready. Many people have said to me on this forum that I should take as long as I need....See MoreHelp-Neverending backsplash decision
Comments (23)Smpop, as A2 mentioned above, I have linear mixed glass, stone and stainless mosaic tile in my kitchen so I obviously love the type of tile you are considering. My granite while actually splotchy reads as more of a solid color and I only used the tile behind the cooktop, so I don't think it looks too busy in my kitchen. Here is a look at mine: For your kitchen, I agree with many of the other posters that the mosaic that you show is great but might not look great in your kitchen. I think you could still go with a linear mosaic tile but I would look for it in a single color or tone on tone color. It is difficult to tell exactly the color that works with your granite but I think something like this glossy linear ceramic might work: Or maybe a frosted and glossy glass like this Those two are from Glass Tile Oasis. You can order samples on line. Good luck with your tile decision. Your kitchen is very nice, so warm and inviting. Comments (16)That looks like a Barker cherry. I tried a true gray with mine, and it wasn't good. (Ended up with stainless.). The one on the left looks a lot like what I tried, but pictures are deceiving. From what I can see, I'd avoid that one. Maybe the one in the middle. It would bring out the gray without being quite so gray. FWIW, from photos of samples, pretty much everyone told me not to do what I did, and at my reveal, people were very positive. Samples are hard. Do what you like....See Moreburtnyks
