Without being able to see all of it - and what surrounds it - it's hard to say. But, I agree, the white mantel isn't doing it any favors.

I love wood burning as well and will have them in two spots in the house (outdoor porch and library). I will have a gas fireplace in the living room but would still want it to “look” wood burning like the photo in my original post. I am trying to avoid glass/black frame and was hoping someone could point me to a brand that makes a gas fireplace in that aesthetic. Thank you!
