Chisue - The only thing that will calm my lion is for him to be discharged from the hospital so he can come home. He says his nurses are all great (he knows better than to say anything different about us nurses), but the Hospitalists are somewhere below the lowest rung of the ladder. They can't seem to tell him anything or even answer his simplest question. I understand his frustration, but sometimes I could just shake him!!

Praying that he gets better soon. Know how you feel, since I had your experience last month.

Gmatx, it sounds like your sweetheart is still feisty. That's a good sign ;-) Maybe one of his nurses can press one of the hospitalists to be more forthcoming?

Ack! Hospitalists! Can't say I disagree with your DH there. Kind of a waste of a medical degree in my experience, but what do I know of the inner workings of a hospital. Maybe they're overworked...like nurses.

Chisue, I wish we still had our regular physicians making daily rounds. I'm sure it is not practical (especially right now), but I have just never felt really comfortable or that confident in a Hospitalist. They can't know you like your regular physician does, and they sure don't have time to read through a chart or ask the myriad of necessary questions to avoid a serious consequence from possibly occurring. Yeah I know, I'm an old stick in the mud.

By the way, Grouchy Lion said he may be getting to come home tomorrow. Said the Hospitalist had told him the blood clot had broken down.

Anneliese32 - I'm sorry, I don't remember reading about you having something similar going on last month. Is everything okay now?

Interesting comments about hospitalists. Making me sick to my stomach wondering if my dad would be better off if we hadn’t trusted the one who wrote him off in August, sending him to hospice with a questionable diagnosis. He’s still alive, home, weak and stuck in bed, but still no diagnosis or sign of going anywhere soon.

ETA - gmatx I just realized I got so hung up on hospitalist talk that I never finished reading the update! I’m so happy for you with this progress!!!

Some wives are gluttons for punishment...welcome home, Grouchy Lion! I bet that clot couldn't take living with the lion. Great news! (Please tell us when he actually gets home -- when you can put down your chair and whip for a moment.

You haven't told us how YOU are feeling, gma. Can you get a little help at home?

@foodonastump -- What does your DF's primary physician say?

Foodonastump - I second Chisue's advice above - talk to your father's primary physician and see what his opinion on your father's condition is. I certainly hope you can get some good medical advice. If you don't feel comfortable or confident with what you hear from his primary physician, just straight up ask him (the doctor) what he would do or who would he take his father to. Sometimes you just have to be very assertive. almost to the point of being obnoxious!

Thanks for the comments about my dad and sorry to derail the topic at hand. He had been checked head to toe, MRI’s, CT scans, blood work... Eventually they just kind of wrote him off as old and dying. Spent weeks in a near vegetative state, then sent home with a hospital bed and a couple sessions of PT. His primary didn’t do house calls so we‘re on our second home care service but good luck getting much more than pain meds out of them. This conversation has been a wakeup call that we’re completely failing him somehow and we need to change our approach. Thank you.

Headed to the hospitl to pick up the Grouchy Lion! Sure wish I knew where all the extra keys to the pickups were - there will be my next battle!

Food you need to realize that you have not failed anyone. If the doctor's did all of those tests and found nothing wrong and you have done what you can do for your dad. People do become old and have good days and bad days. The body will simply stop functioning which is what from this distance is what it sounds like. If you blame yourself for your dad's death and it sounds like you will you need to talk to a counselor that at least here the hospice company provides now. They can explain what you should expect to see during the process to your father's ending. Perhaps with that knowledge it will help you feel less guilty. One of the things they should explain is that some people do not want their loved ones with them when they go. If your dad leaves this world when you are not there it is as he wishes.

Hospice can be extended beyond the initial period if needed.

I'm very glad to hear your husband is coming home, gmatx. What a huge relief, although do keep an eye on his O2.

So glad your DH is returning home. Such good news! I hope this means he is rapidly returning to normal health. Hugs to you and him.

Sorry I didn't update this yesterday after I got him home - I was just worn out (more mental than physical exhaustion). He is doing good, O2 sats holding steady in mid to upper 90's and his energy level is as you would expect for someone who has been in bed 5 days. The only thing different I notice is his voice, but I think that is mainly from sinus drainage and coughing. He slept well last night and feels good this morning, so I think he is doing fine.

Again, thanks to all you KTers for good words, prayers and thoughts. As I've said before, I have been on this site since way back and I have never known participants here not to be kind (except Spike with his Disney and tea cups)!

Food, you need to reread maifleur03's messages to you. If you love your Dad and honor his wishes, you have not failed him. Life has a way of taking strange turns and doing things differently from what we sometimes prefer. Please do not beat yourself up. Always remember, we do not have absolute control over everything that happens, regardless of however much we wish we did.

Food, if your father has been placed in the care of Hospice do not expect him to be seen by anyone who is not a Hospice professional. Keeping a patient comfortable is what Hospice does.

gmatx - I'm so glad your DH (aka grouchy lion) is home and feeling comfortable. Such great news. I hope you both have a happy Christmas/

.Food - If your dad is getting the best care that you can find and have arranged then you're doing well if your dad is comfortable and content. If he isn't comfortable and content then I would be pushing someone somehow. Just because you're old and dying doesn't mean you have to be uncomfortable.

I'm a mama bear when it comes to two things - my kids when they were young and my mom now that she is old and dying and can no longer advocate for herself. But I don't ask for a miracle for my mom, just for respect, comfort and being content.
