cleaning non-slip surface in tub
Comments (69)While it looks like there is a variety of successful approaches, I think the reason some have success with one approach and others don't is the nature of the stains. Some stains are simple body oils stuck in the texture of the nonslip pads. Using something alkaline like shampoo should work for those to soften the stains and allow them to be scrubbed lightly. WD-40 should also dissolve those and lift them. Other stains are based on hard water build up of calcium. The calcium can't be seen because it is white but the calcium will catch and hold the body oils. If you cannot get the calcium off, the stains remain. This is where an acidic approach would work. Barkeeper's Friend is oxalic acid with a mild abrasive. If the stains are calcium based, this should wash them away very easily. I would like to suggest another approach to the plain body oils with no calcium build up. There is a cleaner used in the automotive detailing industry called Super Clean. It comes in a purple spray bottle at auto stores, hardware stores, Walmart, etc. It is basically 409 on steroids. If you have trouble breathing when using 409, then you will really have trouble breathing around Super Clean. I bought some for my car and, of course, it works great. Then I read the label and decided to try it in the kitchen. The first thing I tried it on was burned on grease on a stainless pan - the bottom of the pan. I sprayed it on and let it sit for a "dwell time" of 10 minutes. Then I ran hot water from the faucet into the pan and 99% of it just rinsed clean with no scrubbing. I thought maybe I had a pan with grease that looked burned on but was just sort of already softened, but no. I tried it again and again with the same results. So that is my experience with Super Clean. I thought someone might give it a try on their tub texture spots and report back here with results....See MoreRefinishing cast iron tub
Comments (12)>This Old House site also noted that tub 'liners' can be used. I know nothing about these. Does anyone else? Yes, you pay about what you would pay to have the tub pulled and replaced along with a new tile surround, only instead you pay that money to get a fiberglas thingy made to fit over the existing tub. They're purely junk. I've known two people who did this and both regretted it bitterly. You might want to investigate ROG cleaner. I've never used it but Kohler recommends it and retrorenovation seems pretty stoked about it. Comments (5)The other thing about a cast iron tub like the Kohler Villager is that it can be installed on a level floor and that's that. An acrylic tub needs a mud bed underneath to level and support it. Someone needs to do that mud bed and do it right or it will be an issue for the lifetime of the tub, as our neighbors discovered. The disadvantage of a cast iron tub is that on Day 1 several large someones must haul that thing in and maneuver it into the alcove - no one's favorite job. Our plumbers took care of that as part of the bid on the plumbing job which we hadn't expected. This is the Kohler Villager, $379 in white at HD. We got the version that has a 4" ledge on the wall side (K-714 Villager) which was $554 from Amazon, no delivery charge with Prime. The packing job was horrible, BTW, but it arrived undamaged. Both versions are a quite shallow tub, so if someone using this bathroom needs a soak up to the neck, this isn't the tub you want. For young kids, it's great. Remember that when you buy a tub, you also need some plumbing parts which can be pricey. The tubs above need this (KOHLER K-7160-TF-CP Clearflo 1-1/2-Inch Adjustable Pop-Up Drain, Polished Chrome) which is another $142 from Amazon. The ones they sell at HD to match the tubs they sell are $158-$258. (They don't sell the Villager with the 4" ledge.)...See MoreBathtubs WithOUT the Non Slip Strips
Comments (24)Hi to everyone. I recently had a house fire and fortunately had great insurance, the whole house is to be re-done. Just yesterday, my GC asked me what kind of tub do I want... steel/porcelain or fiberglass. I opted for the steel. I was reading about the non slip surface and about how it recommended to clean with Bar Keepers Friend. Have any of you tried this? I was very excited to have the non-slip surface as the other tub was older and very slippery... but now I read how hard it is to keep clean. oh well. I say I'd rather not me or my elderly parents fall than have a sparkling tub. Of course, I'd rather both.... like the baking soda... I used to use that on the darker tile and hard water stains...baking soda and vinegar to be exact. Worked wonderfully. So - anyone try BarKeepers Friend?...See MoreLaura Grosmaire
