Tiger lady claws?

I heard an ad for this today and was wondering what it was. Apparently a self defense weapon...hold it in your hand and when you squeeze, claws come out so you can defend yourself against an attacker....designed to gather DNA as well.

News to me...not sure I'd feel good about using it without some training though. Not sure I want to get that close to the attacker...of course how close I get might not be my choice.

Looks more like something that would get you severely beaten than something defensive. Of course it would then have the attacker's DNA but you might not live through the beating.

That's a new one for me. Reminds me of Hugh Jackman in The Wolfman.

Sherry, thank you so much for the ID and for the explanation of how you determine the difference. I didn't locate a photo of the wing underside and the photos of the top side of both Ladies looked very similiar to me. I agree, the underside is so colorful and different. I could hardly believe the difference when it spread its little wings and I could see the back. Going to go and correctly tag the photos right now. And thank you for the nice compliments on the photos. A picture is, indeed, worth a thousand words, especially when you're trying to ID these little guys. Got my two Passi incarnata vines planted out yesterday and hope to see a gulf frit one day, too. I planted them in a big pot and am using a wooden teepee trellis over the pot. I've never seen this vine grow so don't know if it will be enough trellis but time will tell. My garden is small and I didn't want to have it coming up in unusual spots! Hopefully, the vine roots are hardy enough that it can overwinter in the pot. Are you guys getting some of this very hot weather? Heat index here today is supposed to be between 105-110. Mary

Congrats, Susan! False nettle holds up beautifully in water! I'm raising RAs on it now in a leftovers container with 3 holes cut into the top and 3 branches about 6" each stuck into the holes. Each branch has about 4 - 6 leaves on it. Since they like hiding in leaf shelters/nests, I thought they'd do better with a lot of leaves all around them, which is why I don't use water picks with RAs. This is the way I raised my others and they all pupated and emerged as perfect adults. This has really been a big year for you - YAY! :) MissSherry

Tables similar to this were used to hold Victrolas. As for the tag, what size is it? If it's a moving company tag, it'll be about the size of a Greenstamp. There would be no name on the piece if the tag is from a moving company, btw. My mom had a dresser that had my great-grandmother's name on a piece of paper on the back, sort of an address label if you will, from when it was mail ordered and shipped to her via train. This could be a possibility for your piece.

Yes, it looks like it just scratches. With something like that you would have to aim for the eyes to have an impact and you may not have the opportunity for the eyes. Then they will come back and sue you for blinding them. Otherwise your just going to get the attacker pissed off. Go to a gun safety course and then go for your conceal carry permit. Of course carrying permits appointments are booked up through April in my city. Your area might not be as backed up. Or take a self defense class.

I don't have enough strength in my hands to be able to squeeze it and expose the claws.

Advice given a long time ago at a safety class unless you are willing to kill someone that is threatening you do not carry a gun. Carrying a gun is only a psychological thing to make you feel safer but without the will to kill and actually stop someone you are putting your life in danger.

Most men are physically stronger than women, and scratching them with one of these will just make them mad and they will take it from you and use it on you.

This type of outcome is also what commonly happens when guns are present. With in addition most shootings being between people that know each other, as when a child gets ahold of a gun that was in the household because it was believed the family would be safer with the gun around.

Think about it: a mugger or other sudden attacker catches you by surprise - maybe from behind - and you having a pistol buried away in your purse is going to help you? Even if you were wearing it on your hip like Annie Oakley how likely is it that you would see the threat coming, get your gun clear of the holster and be pointing it at the attacking party in time?

Why would that be a problem? If I feared for my life, I absolutely would be willing to use deadly force.

    Backing away slowly.

Probably good advice for me to back away as well, no one's mind is ever changed in these debates. But I think we all agree that the cat claw is not going to save us.

Perhaps beating an attacker over the head with a large rutabagas?

Although well-intended, this product would be of little use. There are far more effective ways of defending oneself. Learning self-defense techniques would be a better choice.

( Please. Let's not get into the whole gun debate. )

    I've never seen "claws" before.

I've had all manner of things happen to me on trails. ie: A lady heard me on the trail behind her, I was jogging, years ago.... she swung her 5' walking stick at me as she whirled around to attack whoever was approaching. Ggrrrr...... no contact was made. Good thing she wasn't carrying a gun...I'd be dead....for no good reason.

Never would have been this way until lately...but with a concealed gun and

someone was attacking me, I would be very willing to shoot to kill. Too many

punks, creeps, etc., and as far as I am concerned...they are on their own, just

like me and my anger. An old Lady was severely beaten in a little town

near me...the creeps got a little over $3 from her...they aren't sure she

will recover. The worse part is, if and when they catch them...they will

probably just slap their little hands and call them "bad little boys".

Don’t the claws have the same effect as carrying your car keys between your fingers? I’ve done that on occasion when walking back to my car through a mall parking lot. You also have the panic button for your car handy.

I like Amy’s method. Just go limp.

If they want my bag, they can have it. Hope they enjoy all the crumpled tissues and old sales receipts.

I agree with Lucille on both accounts. I don't have strength in my hands any more. I also would not want to get that close to someone who was going to attack me. I don't have a concealed permit, but I keep a couple of pistols at home. If I can shoot a beloved horse to put him down, it would not bother me to shoot someone breaking in or who tried to do me harm, if I can get my hands on one of the pistols. And since there are no children around....they are loaded and in easy reach.

They look somewhat amusing- and also rather cumbersome for actual fighting. Keeping your keys poking out of your fist is probably still better. Brass knuckles would probably still be superior to the tiger lady claws in efficacy. I do have to wonder about the legality of carrying claws in states that don't allow brass knuckles... concealed weapon issues.

Personally I'm more into blades than fist devices. And it's much easier to get away with carrying large metal spikes than fist devices- I wear them in my hair and no one blinks twice. No one thinks twice about sturdy metal ballpoint pens or old fashioned heavy metal nail files in a purse either. And they all can pass legally in ways regular blades of those lengths cannot.

Many women carry a weapon and don't realize it- their purse. Often overloaded and heavy, it can make for an effective sap. Straps, particularly when worn long cross body, can serve as a garrote.

There is pepper spray. And in places that pepper spray isn't legal- you can find purse sized cans of WD-40, lysol, hair dye, or body sprays that can be used instead. An added benefit of using hair dye is the assailant gets visibly marked as well as blinded.

Learning hand to hand combat is almost always an option too. Even just basic self-defense and practicing strike points is helpful.

I realize many folks jump straight to the gun thing. Not everyone is willing/able to have concealed or open carry hand gun ownership. I think alternatives for guns in the case of being personally attacked is a good thing too.

I would have no problem at all shooting someone trying to hurt me. None.

However I also know my limitations, and I'm a horrible klutz. So I don't have any guns in my house b/c chances are good I'd hurt myself with them. I manage to hurt myself with all kinds of benign objects so I shudder to think what I'd do with an actual weapon.

They don't look like they would be much of a deterrent to an attacker but they might come in handy when pulling pork.

We got into the whole gun thing as soon as getting a gun was suggested.

The reason the police said not to carry a gun unless you are willing to kill someone is because if you injure the person it is a matter of who is telling the truth with no way to prove that the person was attacking or even planning on attacking. You could end up being the one in jail along with supporting the person you shot for the rest of your life. Around that time there were young men 12-23 who were robbing people. How many of you would shoot someone who looked like a child even if they were attacking.

    Around what time Maifleur?

When I was working in Manila back in the early 90s I was advised by several Filipinos to be very careful crossing the streets. If you were to get hit by a car but not killed the driver would more than likely back over you a couple times to finish you off. Why you ask? So they will not have to pay the cost of the victim's hospital stay and possible payments for the rest of the victim's life.

Same goes with using a gun in self defense...always shoot to kill!

But I wouldn't advocate that someone carry or use a weapon unless they have been well trained in its use and with periodic follow up training.

A gun can be a good tool to someone who regularly trains in shooting, particularly human incapacitation shooting, and is licensed and regularly carries. But a lot of people don't do that. Some folks carry and don't train, or don't train for a situation like shooting another person- some carry and aren't prepared/aware of their surroundings/situation because of their confidence of having a gun on them.

Same can be said for any weapons or self-defense though. Carrying a blade can be pointless unless one practices and knows how to use it. Or pulls out that pepper spray a few times and spray to become used to using that weapon.

Getting back to the tiger lady claws of the OP... cumbersome, and I think it would be an item that could give one a false sense of security carrying it unless one practiced using it. It isn't a terribly effective looking flailing fist weapon, so knowing how to throw a proper punch with it in your hand would be necessary.

You'd need a lot of practice to use this tool correctly. If you blindly grab it, you have a 50% chance of holding it upside down! For effective use against a surprise attack, it should already be in your hand with the claws pointing down. Wearing a set of brass knuckles with small spikes may be as effective. Maybe you'd prefer a small dart launcher with the dart tip rubbed across a poison dart frog.

Yeah! Y'know we ought to be able to come up with something more James Bond-ish to keep women safe.

They did come up with an anti-rape condom that a woman could wear...inside were hooks which, once attached could only be removed by a doctor...but that could get you killed I suppose depending on the rapist and how he reacted...

I think sheer instinct is probably going to help more than anything. Not sure that this device would be in an easy to reach spot if I needed it. I was told the key in the hand trick years ago. Vehicles are going keyless so that is becoming less of an option. I carry purses with straps so I don't have to set them down. If someone came after me, I'd like to think it would be a weapon. I'm not sure about that. I've been watching purse snatchings. Those are usually surprise events where the person comes in from another angle. I can still kick pretty high. Hopefully, if something happened, I could get a foot up in the air. Laying down and going limp is another option. Actual fighting would probably be my last option. I don't have a problem with shooting someone, but I don't carry a gun. I get pretty nervous when under pressure like that so I think my adrenaline and my fight/po'd mode would have to kick in.

Purses with straps can work to allow you to get away but I would suggest that you practice swinging the ones you have to see if they would work. Those that are open at the top can spill things including keys, fobs, and phones. Do both sideways and overhand. Be careful as you may end up clobbering yourself. I practiced when I carried a purse and decided it was more dangerous for me and anyone that I was aiming at would just dodge.

I practically know nothing about guns except for what they show in movies and on television. I would be a bad person to give a gun to.

Mostly I try not to ever be alone in darkened areas but it has happened. Then I carry keys in my fist and walk purposely.

I once read that yelling fire gets more attention than yelling help.

This article speaks of self-defense methods and I believe a couple of studies. Maybe self-defense lessons is the place to start?

My Dad, when he was elderly was in the parking lot by his car during the daytime when he was rushed by someone from behind who put him in a choke hold around his neck and he passed out. They stole his wallet. He had no time to react. So it's hard to predict what you'd need to protect yourself.

I remember one crime expert who said you should always carry a money clip with a few bucks in it, so if you are mugged you can take the money and throw it in one direction, which presumably the perp would go in, while you take off in the other.

I've taken a self defense class for women. It was a few years ago, and now, I probably couldn't do all the physical maneuvers they talked about. It was a very good class sponsored by the local sheriff's department. I would recommend looking into participating in one, or calling to see if you could get one going. Also, years ago, I sat and watched as my son took karate classes. We parents learned right along with the kids. I remember some of those moves. Muggers use the surprise factor. If a victim plays along for a few seconds, you too, can catch them by surprise by knocking them out cold!

My father used to tell me that, but it was because, he said, thieves would hurt you if you didn't have at least some money.

Many, many moons ago when I was in college, I took a self defense class for women. We were taught that when walking alone, to thread our keys between our fingers so they pointed out and could be used as a weapon, and also be handy when we needed them to open a door in a hurry. We were taught that an attacker was likely to be stronger and better at using a weapon than we were, and may be able to get it way from us, so it's a bad idea to introduce one into the scenario. If someone comes straight at you, it is better not to turn and run, but to charge forward and feint to the side, surprising them and forcing them to turn around in pursuit. And last but not least, eyes, bridge of the nose and groin are your best bets for delivering enough pain to incapacitate.
