Opus Hardwoods

Has anyone used or heard any feedback on Opus Hardwoods out of Canada. They have only in the past year been distributed in the US. I found this beautiful sample of engineered hardwood, but my builder has not heard of the brand so is reluctant. He’s also concerned about the backing which doesn’t have the multi ply....although I’ve been told this is a backing that is used and reliable. Note: I also find Opus Flooring on a google search and I’m not sure that is the same as Opus Hardwoods.

Our floors were completed May 2021 and we moved back into the house in June 2021.

The wood floor occupies nearly the entire main floor (we have a basement) and stairs.

There is tile in the laundry room, main bathroom and guest bathroom.

Hence, there is wood floor in the entryway, living area, kitchen, two bedrooms, one bathroom, and dining room.

So far, there is not a single issue. An iron end table tipped over and left a dent, but you can really not tell. Less than a cm wide and maybe 5mm deep.

We clean it regularly and have runners by the kitchen sink and beverage area.

I bought a Samsung Stick Vacuum (so much better than the Dyson) which has a stand with emptying mechanism in addition to a robot vacuum.

We use Bona cleaner once a month or so.

So far so good. Holding up and looking just as good as the day it was finished.

I do find myself cleaning it all the time. Wiping up anything that dripped and wiping the crumbs in the kitchen. Too big of an investment not to do so. And not really that much effort.

    Hope this helps.

Where do you recommend to order the Opus from? I am in California and the initial price I got was not nearly as low as those you mentioned above. I need close to 2000 sq feet.

Well, I have the opposite problem! It's been over 100 degrees F. every day for weeks and weeks here. It's too hot for me for work outside in the summer. I have a huge roll of brown paper and I lay pieces out on the dining room table and grout there. I am extremely careful with the grout trying to control the dust and trying to not let bits escape onto the hardwood floor. I put out two layers of paper, one on top of the other. I grout and then when the mess gets to be too much, I fold up the paper capturing the mess inside, and take it to the trash and continue working on the fresh layer of paper. When I am all through with the grouting, I vacuum. I prefer to grout outside on the front or back porch, weather permitting. I also prefer to nip glass outside because a tiny little corner of glass can pop ten feet or more and people have stepped on them before with bare feet. If the weather is horrible, I line the deep sink in the laundry room with a big towel and I nip glass there, taking care not to let it pop out of the sink. What I would LIKE is a large room (heated and air conditioned) set up like a studio with shelving all around and long tables and just let the grout and broken glass fall everywhere without worrying about it!

@Gloria yes, my cabinets are from Ikea - they are Axstad. I am ashamed to say I haven't tackled the under sink trash set up yet! You have given me the kick I needed though, and I plan to do it this weekend. I plan to do what is described in this thread: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5851240/progress-on-ikea-axstad-kitchen-backsplash-lighting#25487123 the instructions are pretty vague, but I think I'll be able to do it.

Hi all, I was trying to find som reviews on Bravada symphony and found this thread. Our new symphony floors were installed by contractor about 3 months ago and was covered with Ram boards. The construction has finally ended and after the complete cleaning I’m first time seeing the floors in real. I’ve always had engineered wood floors but this one to my surprise has so many dents and rips. I wanted to ask here did anyone else have the same issue ? I’m wondering if it’s quality control issue or crew that was working inside did this much damage. Attached are some pictures

@daddysgirlshelby sorry I just saw your message, things have been chaotic around here for various reasons! I didn't end up going with that Opus control board I mentioned. I decided it had too much of a yellow undertone. It's not obvious in the pic but it is in real life especially with a lot of natural light. It's hard to truly capture the colors in a pic. What did you decide to do? I showed my flooring place a pic of your floors and they asked if you by any chance had the lot number or control board number of your custom floor so opus could look it up? The pic shows new naples on the bottom and the Naples sample from the store on top that I liked but didn't like the whitewashing, the new naples looks nothing like it.

This is Opus: Color- Naples. I was able to view it fully installed at a local business in our city. I think it's a beautiful product, and a top contender for our custom build. Be mindful of the color you see in the sample, and make sure they are matching your actual order to the sample board if your going for that specific color. I currently have two samples of Naples- one has honey tones, and the other has warmer/neutral understones. They look incredibly different...

With that being said, I've been told Opus is very good at matching your order to the sample you see/like and will pull from that "run" batch. Sometimes you can order one box of the material before proceeding with the full order to ensure it's the color you like.

    Hope that helps!

Hi all! Just wanted to check in and see how your OPUS flooring has held up. I'm looking to purchase and was unsure of the backing of this flooring. It's not that traditional plywood layers. I need about 1700 sq. ft. and am getting quoted $10 here in Ohio. I find it a little steep for a product that hasn't been used much here in the states. My backup is Shaw or A/T and I'm nervous about those brands, but haven't had any luck in getting ahold of Opus.

  • last year

I am very disappointed by my Opus Pescara as it dents so easily. I had my whole house done in Opus (3400 sqft) because I had loved another brand of engineered hardwood so much in my previous home (Kentwood floors). I am going to investigate how to fill the dents (I have only lived a bit over a month in the house, so I can’t even imagine what the floor is going to look like in a year from now 😱) and it is not like I am banging objects on the floor. I am super careful by nature, don’t have pets. Did it happen before I moved in and did not see it? I would be surprised. The builder had put a cardboardish paper all over. I am pretty sure I would have seen the dents at walk-through.

A year later the floors mostly still look good. there is a board or 2 in the kitchen thats probably gotten wet too much and just looks a bit more worn. i am noticing a very subtle issue though. when the light hits the floors a certain way i am noticing very uniform shallow waves in the floor. not like buckling edges, but throughout the board. no one else ever notices, but i do. when i google i can't really figure out what it is. i am assuming its due to the humid climate. I am too lazy to try to fix it though, the last thing i want to do is move all my furniture out again.

  • last year

Im also in process of looking for engineered hardwoods for new construction. thanks for sharing the info on the dents and the waves. will keep this in mind.

  • last year

Does anyone have pictures of the Pescara installed? Our sample board was a light-medium blonde but the promotional photo on the Opus website looks a lot darker than the samples we've seen. Both are nice colors but so different!

  • last year

Could anyone let me know if this floor is seal ? What kind of finish does it have ? It is waterproof ? How do you maintain it ?

  • last year

I am not aware of engineered floors like this being sealed or waterproof. That is one of the issues with wood floors in general. We have had a number of water drips and the rings clean up with Bona cleaner.

We keep a runner by the sink and dishwasher on the island. No problems so far.

As for cleaning, we run a robot vacuum on occasion and then a cordless stick vacuum for the finishing and finally a monthly cleaning with Bona and a soft wood floor microfiber mop.

The floor is holding up nicely after two years.

We had a small dog. No issues with claws.

So far so good and worth the effort (and cost).

  • last year

@aimeenp have you used a steam mop or wet mop on them at all? This is the only thing I could find re: ripples.

No only a bona. i will make sure our housekeepers are using anything else thoigh.

  • last year

@I M ask Opus to send you a Pescara control board from current inventory. That is the only way you'll know what color you'll get without having to purchase a box. Production runs will vary in color. I didn't go with Pescara, the control board i received was a medium tone and very golden color which was not what I was looking for. Ultimately, I had them create a custom color for me based off samples I sent them. I just received the control board for the custom color and it's exactly what I wanted. Custom color will run you about $1 a square foot extra.

  • last year

@ckfdreams interesting! I had a bunch of samples from various manufacturers incl. Kentwood and Opus. I always test them out to see how easily i can scratch or dent them. I was able to dent all of them easier than I could dent the Opus sample. Was your kentwood floor a harder species of wood perhaps??

  • last year

P.s my floors aren't installed yet so the above comment is only based off my testing on samples.

@larry o Pro Source is cheapest if you have a trade account or you have a contractor with a trade account that is willing to pass their discount on to you. Prosource in TX current trade price is $7.94. Price at local flooring store was $11.00. Flooring prices have increased over the last couple of hrs.

  • last year

    Yrs not hrs 🙂

  • last year

@Muye Guang I believe the finish is the same as most other engineered hardwood floors...urethane. certainly not waterproof. But even if the finish on each board was waterproof, there are still tiny gaps between boards that might let water in if you had a spill. If you want something more waterproof then look at LVP products. Although water could still get through tiny gaps in most of those floors too and because they are essentially made of plastic, it would be harder for any moisture under the boards to dry out which could in itself create issues.

Just sharing for those who may be interested.  This is my custom color. Small samples showing the color I was going for are (left) hallmark malibu, very popular floor on social media but this floor was too expensive and had a UV oil finish that I don't like (right) home depot Belmont, really affordable price but paper thin wear layer.

I think Opus did a great job producing the color I was wanting.

  • last year

@divadly Thank for those great tips! we are waiting on a control board that we ordered. i love your custom color and was also looking into malibu but found it too expensive. Did you contact Opus directly to request a custom color or did a retailer assist you in finding that option?

Does anyone know what percentage of boards are the longer lengths? i noticed that many other brands we looked at specified that 75% of boards woud be long.

  • last year

@I M I worked through a small local retailer even though it cost me more. They really bent over backwards to help me and their installers are top knotch, they've done work for me in the past. I don't think custom colors are something Opus really wants to do regularly (as it's probably a bit disruptive to their production lines) and they don't seem to share the option with retailers unless you ask. My retailer didn't know they did custom until I asked them to check and confirm with Opus.

A couple of things to be aware of:

    1. custom color requires a min 1400 sqft order

    2. An order needs to be placed. I paid 50% of my total order to get them started on the custom color. The 50% may have been per my retailers policy not necessarily an opus policy. Not sure. But I happily paid it because finding a floor that wasn't too yellow, orange, etc while also being good quality and not too expensive has been a nightmare for me. Going on 1 year since i first started searching!

I think Opus has min 75% long boards too.

  • last year

@divadly Hopefully we like our sample board as is, but this is so useful to know and it would never have occured to me to ask. how long did custom color process take? not sure if you’ve installed your floor yet but I hope you enjoy them!

  • last year

@I M I don't have my floors yet as I just approved that sample board they sent me on Friday. It took about 4 weeks to get the custom sample. And I've been told it will take 10 - 13 weeks for my actual flooring to arrive. I'm super excited to get them though!

I hope your sample works out for you! Please come back and give an update and pics after install! I will post pics when mine are installed too but we are a few months away from that yet :)

  • last year

@Sal Lettieri Thank you for the continued follow up. I'm shopping for about 1200 sq ft of engineered hardwood for my home in santa barbara, ca and one of the opus products is the top contender. I think the main drawback for me is the lack of reviews (Sal you are about the only accurate review I've seen!). Can you or anyone speak to the core? I was told by a local distributor that the core for the product I'm interested in is Pine. I'm a little concerned as everything I'm reading recommends a plywood core. Also, I'd be installing over a plywood subfloor, is a moisture barrier necessary?

  • last year
    last modified: last year

I do not know what the core would be. We installed over both slab and plywood as we have a basement over part of the main floor. The slab was evened out (cost an extra $2K) as they ground some parts down and filled other parts; that made the base even throughout.

There was no barrier for any of the areas.

The under surface of the Opus floor has grooves so the adhesive fills in everything. Hence it is much less likely to warp over time.

I will try to find a leftover piece and take a photo.

I had just about 1000 sq ft of jumilla installed. The durability of tye floor is awful. I have white scratches everywhere. Even worse than the durabilty, is opus customer service. The floors looked great when installed, but in less than 6 konths look terrible. Opus is not willing to do anything at all.

  • last year

Glad I didn’t choose Opus. I found this Shaw Expressions Gallery line and am in love. It does seem to dent easy. It’s only been installed for a week so we’ll see how durable it is, but for the price I had to go with them. Their customer service has been top notch!

  • last year

@aimeenp, we installed opus and are having a problem with visible lines too. I think they are called Telegraphing. Hoping to get it resolved. Have you notified the installer?

HI Rhonda, looks beuatiful. Is this Opus Napples?

  • last year

after readding all the reviews, utterly confused if Opus is the right choice. My local retail shop is recommending it. I'm in between Genoa and Naples. I like the slighlty lighter tone of Genoa but don't like it's scraping, and Naples is slightly too dark for me. Anyone have Genoa installed?

  • last year

@cynthialema whichever you choose get a control board from opus to see the color of their current inventory. The sample in the story can vary wildly from their current inventory. The Naples sample in my store was a grayish and honey undertone. The actual inventory was yellow! I considered genoa but ultimately I did not like the amount of whitewashing it had. My floor is not as yellow as it appears in my pic below. The color is hard to accurately capture. It's more of a neutral brown with warm/honey undertones. And it's lighter than the pic shows too.

P.s. there are pics in this thread from Aimee showing genoa installed.

Hi Cynthia, The color in my home is Crete by Opus.

  • last year

Audra_01 do you still love your floors? Are they durable?

  • last year

We had opus installed. The floors telegraphed (see above review). After the first install, opus agreed to replace the floors and the boards were removed and replaced. After it happened with the next batch, they said the floors are perfectly good. We are now stuck with floors that have lines through them. They look great at night and horrible during the day when the light highlights all the lines. Basically the core pattern shows through the top of the floor. This a big loss for us.

  • last year

I should mention that we have had the floor in place fo rmore than two years. They are wood floors and subject to wood floor issues. A heavy metal end table fell in teh living area and now there is a small dent....i.e. distressed look in one spot. We also have stairs into the basement and when the carpet install people came two weeks ago, I taped Ram Board over teh entire stariway. Necessary evil with nice wood stairs.

As for the installaion, we had one of the high end installers here is the Phoenix area do the work. I had to pay some extra coin to have the flooring evened out completely as we have a combination of slab and subflooring over the basement. Worth every penny.

The final answer to your question is "yes", they are holding up. BUT it needs to be treated like a wood floor. :)

    @
aimeenp how is your Genoa floor holding?

@sunarakaa i think pretty well. We also have an issue with the telegraphing, but my mom, husband and realtor say it's not noticeable except for to me...lol. High traffic areas in our kitchen are beginning to show a bit of wear, due to certain family members not being careful when they do dishes and getting water everywhere, lol. Overall, for the price we paid i'm happy.

@ aimeenp thankyou for your response. What kind of wear? can you share a pic please. In my case, I have to pay around $20/sq ft installed.

@ audra_01 can you please share the color and how is your floor holding up?

Opus Hardwood (made in China) is not to be confused with Opus Flooring Canada (made in Canada). The wholesale flooring company in our area requires ordering a sample board from the lot/batch of wood for customer's approval first before processing an order. Why? Because they encountered a lot of returns since the shade is not the same as the flooring sample board in their showroom. On Opus Hardwood's website, they say "smoked/stained: the smoking process gives the wood its unique color, making them slightly vary in color from the sample") . They only do this (order a board for approval) for Opus Hardwood brand because they have been inconsistent. I have attached a photo of Opus Acropolis. All three Acropolis have different shades. If you are doing a big area, just make sure it is coming from the same batch.
