Mongo, Bill - help - kerdi and hardi-board - not working!!!
Comments (2)This is one of the reasons I prefer cement board over fiber-cement for many applications. Try wetting the board then doing just a skim coat of thinset on the hardie. Let it cure. Then the next day wet the cured thinset and hang your Kerdi. I just went through this same situation with another person, the skim coat of thinset seemed to help him quite a bit. Comments (2)You can Kerdi over the drywall, it need to go a minimum of 72" above the drain or above the shower arm, whichever is greater. In the tub if you're not using Kerdi, you can't tile directly to any paper-faced drywall, whether it be green, blue, or any other color. That's been against code since '06. If you have drywall around the tub, then you can pull it and replace it with cement backer board or some other approved backer board. It's best to NOT install cement board over drywall. I agree with lazarususa that the properties that make greenboard moisture resistant can have an effect, but thinset still sticks to it fine. Outside of a shower or tub surround you can tile over drywall with no worries....See MoreKerdi over drywall: I know it's OK... but is it ideal?
Comments (10)Stacey-- As much as I like the Hydroban more, you'd have to get it through places like PGW or Capozza. The only place I know that has it is Dal, and that means the showrooms will mark it up pretty well. Even at Dal, it's not a stock item, which means waiting atleast a week for it. Get the Redgard. All you should need to apply it is a throw-away roller and brush. As for where the CBU meets the lip of the tub, you can fill that gap in with stiff thinset, and then go over it with the Redgard. You might want to tape off the tub, leaving a sliver of tub exposed, and then yes, bring the Redgard down so as to bond to the tub's surface, as well. Be sure to pull the tape just as soon as you've applied the Redgard, so it doesn't dry and rip the membrane on the tub. As for the caulking, save it for the tile....See MoreSchluter to Drywall Transition
Comments (12)The proper way to fix that is to tear out the spot bonded tiles with no waterproofing, and redo the whole. Paying attention in the framing stage the next go around to be actually plumb and square. Wet areas require 95% coverage with thin set, and waterproofing. That doesnt come close to meeting standards....See Morethisisnotadrill
