Best Exterior Navy Blue

Hello!

Wondering who has an opinion on the best exterior deep blue color? Everything I have seen online has said Hale Navy...your ideas? This would be with white trim/gutters.

What I'm looking for.

What do you want from us? IMO there will be as many answers as ppeople answering the question. I don’t know what your house looks like , I do know dark colors fade quickly in the sun and no nicelty if the house faces the sun all day on one side then in no time it will look different from the rest of the house.

You know, every time I come here to ask a simple question, I end up getting complicated answers like this. What do you want from us? The same thing any one that asks a question wants, an answer or opinion. If there is as many answers as people answering the question, then I would get a lot of answers and I could go from there, now couldn't I? I take it that your answer was that dark colors fade quickly in the sun and no[t] nice[ly] if the house faces the sun all day on one side. Then, in no time, it will look different from the rest of the house.

Your answer wasn't what I was asking, but thank you for your opinion because it was [somewhat] helpful.

Man, people here don't make owning a new home fun...and you're a pro? I'd never work with you.

No - it’s not the size, there’s just a lightness of touch about it already. But it’s your home and I do understand if you fancy a change. Personally, if inclined to alter anything, I think I would be looking for just a subtle contrast on some of the trim to the body colour. Perhaps picking up a colour from the stone? But that’s personal taste. It’s always difficult with photographs anyway, as they cannot represent all colours as they actually appear. But how would you describe your roof colour?

Custom paint can be mixed for any solid colour swatch the size of a quarter or larger. Sherwin Williams has SO many colours there should be one that is identical or nearly so to your wallpaper. Do not select the final colour in the store. My SW has such terrible lighting I take the pieces of paper outside in the sunshine before taking home to look at in the actual room.

Part of the beauty of MCM is that the design was based on what Frank Lloyd Wright coined "organic architecture". The elements on the outside were designed to blend into and be a part of the natural surroundings. Although Cypress was Wrights favorite wood, Redwood siding is classic MCM and was used in many of the homes that he designed. https://www.masterclass.com/articles/organic-architecture-guide#what-is-the-purpose-of-organic-architecture It is your home, but I think if you own a classic MCM home you may want to understand the core concepts of the architectural style before making any major design changes. If you hate redwood and want to change it you may want to consider using colors from the natural surroundings rather than colors that will pop. That said, one of my favorite home exteriors is a cottage painted in SW Begonia. For me, it fits with the style of the home.

Hi - if you really fancy navy there are some questions to ask yourself which may help.

How dark? How greyed or alternatively how colourful?

Even those simple questions can help you filter options out immediately. Have a look at lots of colorographies at The Land of Color .com to compare attributes of lots of popular colours. E.g.

Old Navy is from the same Hue Family as Hale Navy but heading further on over to the Purple Hue Family.

ON is darker than HN (Value) but nearly twice as colourful (Chroma).

Due to this and ON proximity to the Purple Hue Family, its inherent purpleness will be more apparent in certain lighting, in comparison to HN.

Stunning is lighter than both HN + ON and is also the most colourful.

P.s. out of the examples you gave, am not so keen on the navy blues combined with the orange/red roof tiles.

Taking your roof colour into consideration and any other exterior fixed finishes, will have a huge impact upon how harmonious the resulting exterior colour palette will feel.

Hi Sabrina, I've seen Hale Navy work nicely on the exterior with white trim. That being said, Marylee has a good point regarding roof color. Grays tend to work the best for me.

My house is light gray with white trim. The front door is Hale Navy but I often think it looks black and wish I picked a navy that wasn’t so dark.
