Does it ever work to put items on top of cabinets?

Our new kitchen is almost complete. The kitchen walls are ceramic to the ceiling and a soft white. The cabinet color is Melted Brie. The cabinets above the stovetop are opaque glass. The blue you see is part of the 'living room' and will shortly be a pale green, referencing the color of the glass cabinets, and giving us higher LRV (north facing room with overhang.) The hallway, (yellow) will be a neutral white. We have a beige & white runner coming for the floor between the sink and cooktop.

We keep our countertops clear of many items (as pictured.) My husband asked for more color and pointed to the top of the cabinets, asking if something could go up there. We both love green & blue and look to harmonious color palettes. So for us, no red, orange, purple :-)

So to my question, does it ever work to put items on top of cabinets? And please give us any suggestions you have. Thanks so much!
