I'm back ...am I being ripped off?
Comments (20)Apparently, the mineral oil used with R12 doesn't mix with R134a and additionally provides a sealing effect on non-barrier type hoses so that the R134a doesn't leak through them. On some cars the clutch cycling pressure switch may need to be adjusted for R134a. I had my 1988 Ford Mustang 5.0 converted to R134a. Besides changing the fittings and installing a Smart VOV (which was my idea, my mechanic had never used them before), everything else is all original. The Smart VOV is a replacement orifice tube that self-adjusts for operating pressures and provides performance similar to a TXV system. It's supposed to provide colder air at idle with and reduce the load on the compressor. It was $20 at NAPA so it wasn't a big expense. I have no idea how much it helped compared to a standard orifice, but my mechanic was impressed. Anyway, all of that was about 4 years ago and the AC still works fine....See MoreCode issues being brushed off by contractor - help!
Comments (17)Hi, I am a licensed electrician on Long Island. I worked in 5 boros for 12 years and what you explained is not right. If the contractor did the electrical work and what makes it worse and possibly a crime is if he listed a Licensed electrician as the one doing the work. Here is some info that may interest you. Don't let guys like this run unchecked, they ruin this business for the rest of us. Best wishes to you. Electrical work is defined by the NYC Electrical Code as "the installation, alteration, maintenance or repair of any electric wires and wiring apparatus and other appliances used or to be used for the transmission of electricity for light, heat, power, signaling, communication, alarm or data transmission." For example, changing a lightbulb is not considered electrical work, but changing the light switch or fixture is. The Electrical Code was enacted to establish standards to protect both the public and property in the City of New York.(5 boros) If electrical work is performed without a permit, the owner of the building, as well as the individual who performed the illegal work, may be subject to violations, summonses, court appearances and fines. Furthermore, an unlicensed electrical contractor who performed the work may be fined for working without a license. To resolve electrical violations, you must hire a licensed electrician to file an application with the Department and correct the violation. To report work that is performed without a permit, call 311. To report unprofessional conduct by a licensed electrician, call our Investigations Unit at 212-825-3631....See MoreBedrooom Narrow Walk in Closet 45" W X 50" D X 102" H - Need help
Comments (15)Ok... I just checked and measured etc... I can triple hang on the back wall there is enough room... no long dress but shirts, sweaters etc... Starting from 1 inch from the ceiling and using a pull-down bar as per latifolia's suggestion... and next one down moves back about 5 inches and adjust the height... I can then put shelves or I am thinking the third rod right below it. Now then the front rod can be removed or adjusted and can see what I can do next... I can get rid of that large canvas holdall and use baskets on my side of the wall... I can go as wide as 10 inches..... and either put a half rod in front I really don't want to double hang in the front....See More3 ton AC needs replaced; manual J indicates bigger unit needed; help!
Comments (20)Are these installers choosing to ignore the load calculation and your desire for the temperature to be 72-74F degrees during the hottest part of the day? Do they think 3.5 tons will be sufficient or is it a matter of not spending the additional money on a furnace? A 2-stage AC provides some additional comfort. It will be be quieter and you won't have the cold blasts of air that a 3.5 or 4 ton system normally provides. I am not sure why an installer would refuse to install a 2-stage system. Did he give a reason? I am a little skeptical your current furnace does not have a blower capable of 1600 CFM of air flow. If you can provide the model number so this could be verified. Investing in a 95%+ efficiency furnace may be a good investment if you plan to live in this house for the next several years. 3.5 ton 13 seer $4700 installed; 3.5 ton 16 seer $4800 installed. Can't comment on these prices without know what is being installed. You probably will not achieve a 16 SEER rating with your current furnace. The installer has no way of verifying the performance. Quoted $4000 installed for 90K BTU 80% single-stage. "Comfortmaker-Tempstar". I think you are being quoted a low end furnace. Avoid this if you have the funds. Basically $8k for a 3.5t AC and 95% furnace. Additional $4k to go to a 4.0t two-stage stage AC and 97% two-stage furnace. Another option is a single stage 4 ton AC and single stage furnace if the $12K quote is beyond what you want to spend. If you provide the model numbers of all equipment (coil, thermostat etc.) you will get some feedback...See Morebbstx
