What do you keep in your VERY shallow drawers (under cooktop)
Comments (9)Mine is also 1.5" (exactly) on the inside, though it's about 45" wide. There's a bite out of the back (it was built that way with edges around), for the services behind it. Besides what I mentioned above, there are a couple of spatulas that I had forgotten (besides the one that didn't fit so easily), a bag of bamboo skewers, cooking chopsticks, the bars that hold a steamer basket inside a wok, a big spoon rest and a couple of pasta measures. Truth, though, the small grill plate sits on the large one, the pot holders are in the asador grate, and the wooden spoons are all over the big spatter screen (which I hardly ever use). This picture is years old but it shows a lot of stuff. It's better organized now, and has more in it. I wouldn't actually do towels. It's too easy for one to get squished and then jam the drawer. The manual is a good idea if it's fairly stiff and flat (i.e., won't blow open and jam), and the trivets and rack are perfect. It's hard putting those away anyhow. :)...See MoreWhere do you stand when you open your range door?
Comments (14)I'm short and I straddle, too, even though at present I have 15 feet in front of the oven (and even my aging backside doesn't require that much room!) I have a 48" range with double ovens arranged next to each other. I use a wooden hook or pot holders to pull out the oven racks and then pick up the cooking vessel and pivot towards one of the front burners or my unique, centered, slab 'o granite that replaced the unused chargrill section. I'm thinking that when my new kitchen happens I will probably have plunk space on the island just opposite the range - it will be closer and more convenient, I think. If I have to open one oven after the other then I must close the near one to reach the far one. I think my ovens are relatively higher than most as they are definitely not low. I think the sideways approach to the oven feels more ergonomically correct, to me. Somehow the cooking vessel is closer to my body, so I do less of the stretch/reaching/lifting that's supposed to be hard on your back. Does that help? Comments (9)I love having small drawers for lids--pyrex lids, lunchbox container lids, and mason jar lids. We also have a couple small drawers in which we keep boxes of tea. I can also imagine using small drawers for overflow/backup spices, cake decorating stuff, cookie/biscuit cutters, hot pads/mitts, bags of nuts and grains when new---before they get dumped into mason jars (I don't like keeping bagged items on shelves), flat graters and zesters, lesser used things cluttering up the utensil drawer (cherry pitter, extra pie server that is fatter than I like to use, extra garlic press, nutcracker and picks, candy thermometer, turkey baster, pizza cutter, grapefruit spoons....), paper napkins (for lunch boxes), plastic forks and spoons (also for lunch boxes), small paper bags, manuals for small appliances, file boxes of recipes, plastic veggie and bread bags I want to reuse. I would love to have small drawers for ramekins and custard cups and clean glass jars....See MoreIf your kitchen is small, or open, where do you put your freezer?
Comments (36)I think it's 6-1/2 or 7 x 10 including the attic stairs, so it's not teeny tiny, but not huge, either. There are lots of houses in this area from this era with this kitchen but they did a far better job of making it feel spacious and useful than the others. Here's a flip with the same basic kitchen: And yeah, I've been looking at another house where I could double the number of base cabinets by going down to a 24" range, all the way from one cabinet to two, whoohoo! I've lived with smaller kitchens than this, but I think they did a super job of making a small kitchen live large....See MoreIdaClaire
