Ottoman to complement couch

My first home!! The couch I’ve ordered doesn’t have a matching ottoman. The couch is tufted, velvet-like, & charcoal colored. I’m having trouble choosing an ottoman to complement it because the couch fabric isn‘t really solid & I don’t want it to look thrown together. Maybe a white leather ottoman? Should it be tufted since the couch is? I’d appreciate any ideas or specific products!

I think your ottoman can be different than the sofa without looking thrown together, as they aren’t the only two pieces in the room. And I’m not sure I’d go with white either. Maybe a creamy color, maybe something that looked like it was covered with a middle eastern or Asian rug, something textured or fringed with a little pattern. But actually if I had a vote in this I’d look for a coffee table instead of an ottoman as your sofa already has a built-in ottoman.

Thank you! I will consider a coffee table, also. If I went with a ottoman - you’re saying it won’t have to be tufted to look good with the couch?

I love the Chloe recliners - very stylish and they do look very similar to the rolled arm couch. Do you know what color leather they are? I can tell just by looking at it that DH will probably find the H&M recliner very comfortable, so we'll start with those two. Mitch - I would like to have a couch and loveseat with the two recliners, but DH wants the recliner facing the television (his big screen, of course!) and there's a fireplace on the wall adjacent to the chairs, so I was planning on using two upholstered chairs on the other side of the room, in front of the entertainment wall and facing the recliners. Since I can't block the television, I think any extra seating along that wall will have to be either 2 smaller chairs or a bench. I really like the picture above with the two couches facing each other and the chairs between, but that won't work with my somewhat odd floor plan (the fireplace is actually directly centered between the living room and dining room). This is a close up of a tweedy type rug that might work for you - I just think a darker rug will cozy up the area and complement the ottoman so much better.... This rug has been discontinued and the remaining sizes are probably too big for your space, but it might be a direction to be looking, if it appeals to you: Something like this might work, too. A 3-seat sofa and two comfy upholstered armchairs are your best bet for comfort and flexibility. Second option would be a reversible chaise sofa and one chair. The chaise that flips from right to left will give you many more options for arranging the room. Cornering furniture eats floor space, and says you don't really have room for your stuff. I would eliminate the cornered armoire or place it where it can lie flat against the wall. Maybe it would be useful in one of the kids' empty bedrooms. That will open the possibility of some window treatments that will soften and cozy the space.

Really helpful info; you have a lot of decisions and my advice is to break them into chunks. The layout is first, which will determine size/type of furniture, to accommodate 6. I really think once walls are lightened and sheers are replaced with blinds (seating will create lower privacy). Having seating in front of windows won’t be a detriment and would be a shame to loose so much useful space, In order to close up the middle area, and get storage, consider a floating layout (less the chair at doorway) or add a couch/chairs, whatever best suits your needs. Find an app to test different layouts. A big decision is the couch/sectional style and color, as it’s your biggest investment and will drive everything else. With young children and being a well used room, I don’t suggest going too light and light walls will do the trick. Since you are comfortable with grey, still incorporate but go lighter and use soft earthy accents colors for a modern farmhouse look. Accessorizing comes last and pour through inspiration pictures and save for reference. Bring home things to test, but start with rug. Paint last. For your storage needs, take advantage of the back wall (try Ikea) and to balance the TV wall, add art and lower tv.

I totally agree. We can have poufs in the space of you want. But I think you need a wood coffee table with this piece

No to tufts, if it isn’t physically attached to the sofa it doesn’t have to be an exact match. Lots and lots of ottomans would look good with it. The tufts are a nice detail on the sofa, but if they are also on everything else it’s too much. So instead maybe look for an ottoman with some nailhead trim to echo the shape without copying it. Or maybe a pattern like a simple graph that echos the tufted grid without copying it.

Your sofa does not have an ottoman, but an extended chaise to create the sectional. Advantage to an ottoman is
a tray can turn it into a coffee table,
hidden storage can provide space for a throw,
or additional seating when needed.
As far as fabric or color, a smooth finish - tufted or not - in a darker shade of your sofa would work.

I prefer a coffee table but my husband is set on a small pouf/ottoman for that side of the couch. He usually doesn’t care about these things so I felt it’s right to consider his feelings this time lol!
