Yeah, the hugger style mounts aren't very effective at all--much better to use the shortest down rod. One thing I would consider very carefully if you are planning cans and a fan is to be very sure that the fan blades won't be moving in the light beams from the cans. That kind of strobing effect can be incredibly annoying.

This one always catches my attention in the Ballard's catalog - I really like the look and am considering it for my home. The one you found is fluorescent and I personally don't like fluorescent light especially from a ceiling fixture. And regardless of the new lighting regulations (which I have a feeling may not happen as proposed) I don't buy fluorescent only fixtures because I want options. Both products are made in China which doesn't make me happy. I called Lamps Plus and all their products are made in China with the exception of one German line. That's a hard battle to fight. Lynn, I suggest you try both the Cree LR6 and the Cree CR6. We tried both in our house and pulled out the LR6s and replaced them with the CR6 lights. The CR6 lights are actually less expensive than the LR6 lights but they dim much lower than the LR6 lights. The specs don't show a big difference in dimming but I can tell you the difference is very substantial. Also, the LR6 lights are more sensitive to the type of dimmers used, and we tried a number of different dimmers from the list recommended by Cree before finding ones that were satisfactory. The Home Depot Cree lights are rebadged CR6s, but they may have changed some of the components because the lifetime is 30,000 hours (I think) instead of the 50,000 hours with CR6 lights from Cree.
