"Is this too much shade?" How high are the standards you want to hold to? If you are ok with just keeping the plant's alive, you might be able to manage that, but keep in mind a plant's ability to defend itself against insects and disease is a byproduct of and directly linked to its metabolic rate. As long as your plants are making more food/energy by way of photosynthesis than they burns during respiration, and none enter a maelstrom that leads to the drain due to insect predation or disease, the plants should live. If your standards lean more toward providing the best opportunity for your plants to realize as much of their genetic potential as possible, you might consider researching their light needs and focusing on providing what they need - maybe a grow bench beyond the (autumn - shadows will lengthen after Jun 21 in the N hemisphere) shadow line from the building

Think of it this way: as growers, our job is pretty much limited to not much beyond identifying what is limiting our green friends and eliminating the limitations. No one decides what is right or wrong, acceptable or unacceptable, but you, and I wish you much success.
