Best/worst blender for ($150?
Comments (5)I have the Oster beehive blender with the glass jar that works like a charm. I searched for one that doesn't use any plastic where the jar sits on the motor base because I've had too many where the plastic teeth will break and render the blender useless. So far I've not had a problem with the Oster (it has a metal direct drive base). We make smoothies every morning with ice and frozen fruit. In fact I picked up a second one on sale for $60 in case the first one had any problems but it's still in the box and will probably be used in the basement bar instead....See Morewhats the best blender?
Comments (22)I have the Blendtec Total Blender, and all can say is it is great. I deliberated on getting a vita-mix, and other blenders that were cheaper. This blender does everything great, ice is simply not an issue, whole juice is not an issue, noise for me is not an issue since you are not blending for more than 45 seconds. PROS: - Blends anything perfectly - No fear about it seizing up or overheating - 64 OZ container so it can blend a lot at once - Fits under cabinets - It is not too heavy or bulky - Containers are easy to get into and clean up very easily CONS: - Doesn't blend small amounts (4oz. or less) very well - Can splash if lid is not on properly, so be careful...See MoreWhat is the best Pastry Blender?
Comments (13)My first pastry blender was the wire one, which was much better than using two knives or a fork. The wire pastry blender was similar in shape/size to the one Diana posted a picture for above, but the wires bent easily. I now use one like the one in the picture and it's much better. A food processor will also do the job, but use a gentle finger on the pulse button. Avoid hands for blending fat into flour. Hands tend to be warm enough to melt the fat, and that's not what is needed for pastry. There's also a pastry blender that looks like a potato masher that is supposed to work great because of the way it's held and a little bigger work surface. Another advantage is that you're hand is farther away from the mixture. I haven't had any personal experience with it. Check out the Amazon.com link below for a huge selection of pastry blenders, including the "potato masher" style. -Grainlady Here is a link that might be useful: Pastry Blenders...See MoreBest Stick/Immersion Blender?
Comments (20)I have a monster Kitchen Aid one that I got because of reviews and because it seemed longer than all the others; I wanted it to be able to work in tall stock pots cause I initially bought if for making homemade cold-processed soap. It did an AMAZING job for that but for all cooking purposes too. Gets things done very quickly cause it's so powerful (has cord too) but it's pretty quiet too. A couple of weeks ago I made mashed potatoes with it cause my electric hand mixer broke. I couldn't believe I've been using a typical mixer all these years when I could have been using the stick blender! What's funny is that I have a potato ricer to get mashed potatoes extra smooth and creamy, and it's kind of a hassle but a nice effect/texture. With the stick blender, in way less time, I had that same creamy smooth texture. All the big brands will be good I'm sure but I recommend you get one that's tall enough in case the gift-recipient uses tall pots!...See Moreplllog
