Does anyone have Donna Sandra quartzite?
Comments (28)I just came from seeing the Donna Sandra in a full slab (several actually) and it is indeed NOT super white. The Super white IS a Quartzite, but has Marble properties & will scratch, etch & stain like a marble. I know this because the Super White was my 1st love. I wanted the Super White so so bad, but with much research & sifting through the many places in my area within 200miles, actually driving to see it & seeing for myself, that depending on the slab yard/ distributor & seeing it in several places, it was being called anything from a Marble, to a Quartzite to a GRANITE, it got so confusing & annoying. I finally found out through my Nephew who's a Geologist that it's a Quartzite & rates 4-5 on the Moth scale, which is just slightly higher than Marble unfortunately, but wow ow is it beautiful & he said that given it's Marble properties, if you, not only have your fabricator seal it, but get it professionally sealed at least one more time before use, then you should have less problems with it. Which brings me to the Donna Sandra, it's a TRUE Quartzite. I spent over an hour testing it, sealed & unsealed & it definatly etched when not sealed, but a lot less with the sealed piece & cut right through my glass tile with little pressure. Again though, you need to seal it more than once preferably or even though it's a Quartzite, it'll still etch & stain easier than a Granite will. But OMG, I love it even more than the Super White, which says alot, because I love the Super White. I think I'm going to take the chance :)...See MoreI may have found my quartzite...anyone have Antarctica?
Comments (32)Well, the behavior of the rock makes sense. Knowing what we know now, thanks to Sweetcheetah, is that the rock is extremely well-bonded, pure quartz. This rock went through a lot of metamorphism to the point where the quartz grains grew into each other. The degree to which this happens with quartzites depends on how much metamorphism it undergoes. Some quartzites aren't much different from the sandstone they started out as. But others get much more heat and pressure and approach melting, but don't melt. Instead they recrystallize where the grains all grow into each other. It looks like in this rock the crystals are fairly large, which probably makes it more challenging to work with. So yeah, cutting this rock would be a lot like cutting glass. Extremely difficult and prone to breaking. As I described above, quartz (and glass) tends to break unevenly so it's hard to make a clean cut in that case. Too bad, Antarctica is a stunner. But the Snowflakes is cool too! Soilbean's example is fantastic (and those pendants - swoon!)....See Moredoes anyone have ball blue book for canning?
Comments (13)I found the following recipe online, and the gal who posted it mentioned the Blue Book, so maybe this is the one you are looking for. MUSTARD PICKLES 1 qt. small green tomatoes 1 qt. small pickling onions 1 head cauliflower 1 gallon cold water 6 Tbl. dry mustard 1 Tbl. turmeric 4 red bell peppers 2 qt small cucumbers 2 c. salt 1 c. all-purpose flour 2 tsp. celery seed distilled white vinegar Cut tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and cauliflower in medium pieces. Add onions. Make brine of salt and water and pour over vegetables, let stand 24 hours. Heat just to scalding point, then drain. Mix flour, mustard, sugar, celery seed, and turmeric with enough cold vinegar to make 2 qt. in all. Cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Add pickles. Heat thoroughly and pour into sterilized, hot jars and seal. Process 10 minutes. Yields 4 pints....See MoreDoes anyone have quartzite installed?
Comments (7)We went through Home Depot and picked out an Antigua Quartzite slab from Daltile. I tried to scratch the sample with a razor knife and it I honestly couldn't see a mark. The sample was able to score glass quite deeply. I tested it for stains and the only thing that left an almost undetectable stain in the veining was red wine left to soak for 24 hours. I believe sealing will stop that from happening. I also left lemon juice on it as well and it did not etch. Our installer (Home Depot outsourced) was shocked that we paid $68 a sq. ft. Less than the fancy quartz that I was easily able to scratch when I tested the sample. It's absolutely beautiful installed. I love it. I can't stop looking at it. Originally I wanted corian but changed my mind when I saw this. Now I'm not sure about what to do about the backsplash....See MoreRelated Professionals
