my recommendation for a casual sewing machine
Comments (4)I have a White "Jeans" Machine that I've had for many years. Sturdy and uncomplicated to use. Called "Jeans" because it will sew denim without any trouble. A little more expensive but a good little work horse.I also have several other machines. One of which is an old Singer clone straight stitch which sews the most beautiful straight stitch. I haul it out for any top stitching. I'm sure it can be found cheaper than this price. Here is a link that might be useful: Jeans Machine...See MoreSewing Machine Recommendation?
Comments (3)It isn't always the brand of sewing machine. Its just that the cheaper, newer ones are not meant to last very long. Find a reputable dealer, one that will give you a warranty on a older, used, simple straight stitch, zig zag sewing machine. Those 15, 20 year old machines that are metal, a bit heavy to pick up, will outlast most of the 300 dollar ones today. I have seen some Older Pfaffs 360's, Older White, Viking (6010's),Necchi and Singers still sewing after 30 years. They can handle the size 18 needle and stitch denium. Alot of the better, older ones will have a front loading bobbin. The " drop-in bobbin"" ones are "medium" duty and have abit of trouble with the heavier fabrics. All of these have metal hooks and used metal bobbins. Plastic bobbins "chip" and cause stitching problems. Hope you find something!!...See MoreSewing Machine recommendations
Comments (26)When I was growing up, my parents owned a fabric store. My father would buy industrial machines (ugly, but great) from the local cotton mills. We kept the machines at the fabric shop along with an old Singer so that we could sew when there were no customers around. I worked there on weekends and all summer from age 13 until I graduated and moved away. I often taught folks some basic machine sewing and helped them find patterns and fabrics to meet their level of expertise. My parents gave me a Singer for graduation in 1972 that worked great for 20+ years. I bought another Singer to replace it in the mid-1990s and it was junk -- all plastic. While I don't have a machine right now, I would go look at the Bernina and Viking lines with minimal frills. I used to make lined jackets and frilly blouses as well as lined, pinch-pleat drapes on a basic machine. I also agree to go to a really good local fabric/sewing machine shop that provides lessons and can help match projects with level of expertise. Having the right tools is so important whether it's sewing, gardening, cooking, etc....buy quality that suits the functional needs. I'd rather pay more for something that will last 20 years than to pay less money 5 times over and over again. Cameron...See Moresewing machine recommendations...or a source for old presser feet?
Comments (99)Lascatx, your wing chair with the embroidery is lovely. I wouldn’t be in a rush. I think I noticed some slight discoloration from someone’s head. Yes? is that what bothers you? I have some ideas for how you might remove that (if indeed there is discoloration). Fori — very nice wing chair lines. The chair has good bones. I was at a home operated antique store barn and fell in love with one of the most attractive, ample wing chairs with wings that bowed out in the most elegant way. The upholstery was very worn and it would need replacement (expensive) and probably a slip cover to protect that. I asked the owner for a price and had to gulp hard. I believe the quote was something like $600. I had to pass. Maybe it was Thomas Jefferson's. Nicole — I was looking at sewing machines and came across another of those German built Gritzner-Kayser sewing machines like my green one. This one was the copper color. The seller was asking ~ $360 and the machine didn’t even look cleaned up, so it probably wasn’t oiled and adjusted either. One thing about that model, I don’t beleave it has the same amount of ”lift” between the presser foot and the bed as some of the other all metal 158 prefix Kenmores have (5 quarters). Last night I came across some selling two machines for $50. One was a Singet that I don’t care for, but the other was for a Kenmore 158.504 that looked promising to straight stitch (ss) or zig zag (zz) heavy material. But I don’t need it and the drive is about 75 miles each way. Gas is expensive nowadays. Tempting though. Everyone here with chairs that need upholstering should list what sort of room and meals, lake, ocean, mountains or canyon views they can offer, as well as features like wilderness hiking or cultural highlights such as theatre, concerts and museums or 3 star dining. We could queue up for your visit with your scissors and talent....See MoreLukki Irish
