Was outside cleaning out the beds, and when I was cutting back the peony foliage noticed the red spear tips for next year poking through already. I don't mean I went digging for them -- I mean they were poking through the soil surface already. That's crazy! I wonder if that gives us any clues as to what sort of winter it will be. I also noted in passing that buds of trees and shrubs look like they're fattening up already -- a couple months ahead of schedule, I don't recall ever noticing them fattening up before winter even sets in.

In my climate, they pretty much always do..then sit there through winter.

I use to live in Texas by the border of Mexico and I am totally surprised that you got back into the USA with any kind of seed. They even cut open Avacados and remove the seed before you can cross back over. Be very very care eating these seeds. They dont always tell you the truth about their stuff in Mexico. They just want your money. Is your sister losing weight or poisoning herself?

Aloha Sandpounder, Lisa, Ilima and Farmfreedom, It is beginning to sound like pistachios might be the next nut tree I'll try in the back yard. The health food store sells them "raw" so I'll get a few and plant them and see if they sprout. Hmm, anybody know if they are a hybrid and if they self-pollinate? Thanks for the peanut idea, Ilima. When I finally get the official garden (it still needs a fence to keep out chickens and a hose bibb installed for watering) put together, then I will have a space for peanuts. Until then, maybe they could grow in the flower bed by the house? Do they take up a lot of room? Farmfreedom, those are some good ideas, however not all of them would work in Hawaii. We have difficulties getting things such as chestnuts, walnuts and filberts cold enough in the winter. Actually, there are a LOT of mainland plants and trees we don't have enough "chill hours" for. We can't get them cold enough for them to flower and set fruit. Most apples, peaches, pears and cherries can't be grown here. There are about three varieties of apple and peaches which can be grown, but we have to be really selective and get a "low chill" cultivar or they don't get enough chill hours. Peonies and lilacs are two more which don't survive, although I've ordered a "low chill" lilac which I hope will live and produce flowers. The Big Island of Hawaii has most of the climates available on the planet, but they are only in small spots on the island and no one spot has all the climates. I'm down near the ocean in an area with dirt and rain so it is a better growing area than most. However, I don't have the winter time cold and we do have some ferocious snails, insects, fungus and molds to deal with as well as the occasional nematode and those pesky chickens, too. Im not far from you. I'm in Huntington Beach and assume you are in Pendelton, right? I had one that I kept in alive in a large pot for about 4 years. It got about 6 feet tall with mature leaves. I brought it inside and kept in front of my brightest window everytime the overnight low was going to be less than 60F, and every day it was above 60F I took it back outside to get it bright light. It worked well because it seldomly gets that low of a temp, but it was a LOT of daily work from Jan-March, and I finally got a little lazy, hence, it died. ONE NIGHT, I was drinking and didnt feel like taking it in. The low got to about 55F and within days all the leaves started browning and over the next few weeks all died. It's not impossible, I know of one locally that is in a heated greenhouse and is about 15 feet tall, but other than that I think it is a crazy amount of work. If you are going to try it, make sure to get the Malaysian Coconut (Cocos nucifera). It is the most cold hardy of all the coconuts. Check you local Home Depot in their interrior plant section. They usually sell them there as a novelty plant. Look at the price label and if you see that label is from "The Plant Stand" (which is usually our local Home Depots' supplier) it is most likely a Malaysian Coconut, thats usually the kind of seed they use. Are they sprouting, as in elongating, or just on the tuber? I know my tubers have red spear tips now, but they are not "breaking through," or whatever the official word is for when they emerge. I've also had tubers overwinter with the red spears basically at soil level because I was far too concerned about burying them too deeply. They did have lots of fall leaves that fell on them naturally, as some protection. But, seeing healthy red spears on the tubers is normal here. Having those spears begin to grow and unfold is not!

I can't speak to the peonies specifically, but it has been SUCH an unusually warm fall. I mean, it's just not normal to be working outside in the yard in mid- to late-November in a short-sleeved t-shirt, never mind to be sweating while working in short sleeves in November. It wouldn't surprise me at all to think that plants (and animals, for that matter) might be confused! At the very least, things are staying green a lot longer; I can see them putting on new growth as well. Here we are past Thanksgiving and I've got summer annuals still in bloom and looking great on my patio. Granted, those are annuals, but still, it's just not normal to see petunias, etc, next to Christmas decorations! Not here in New England, at least.

IMO the problem, as far as our plants are concerned, comes in when that new growth does eventually get hit by some kind of real winter. Can we do something to protect them? Do we need to do something? Extra mulch? Would that work? I don't know...

I have plans to install a huge fence next spring, but I’m thinking I could do it now, since our temps have hardly dropped to the low thirties. The ground hasn’t even started to freeze. And it’s been drier than it might be come spring. Definitely odd weather—and worrisome for the future.

It's just the red pointy tips poking through, not elongating/sprout yet -- like I said, never have seen that this early.

I don't really know that there's anything we can do except just leave things be...
