This is what I found.

Dirtdigger, I'm sorry to see such damage, but I'd bet that's gopher damage, not voles. We have both voles and gophers. Voles pick on smaller plants here and mostly grass, which they store in their tunnels. Vole tunnels run fairly close to the surface, while gophers go deep, tunnel a long ways and come up to larger roots which they demolish, leaving a rose or other plant with only its top growth. Our cats are really keeping the voles down this year, and in the past, badgers which are all over these desert hills, have decimated the gophers, really reducing their destruction in my garden. Entrances to gopher tunnels have a pile of dirt called frass next to the openings. If you see one of those, you've got gophers. But often the entrances are a long way off. Diane

I think Diane is right that gophers are the problem. I plunked Alnwick Castle, when this happened March 2019, in a tub of water and soaked overnight. I then potted it up and it miraculously survived and is doing well.

The only holes around the rose or in that bed were about two inches in diameter and no mounds around them, i have actually trapped several of them they look like voles but could just be mice.

In the past i had good luck deterring them with castor oil but i was obviously to late to put it down this time.

I did try to salvage a few more cuttings and placed the main root stock in some water. Im going to pot it up as well, hopefully something takes root.

Unfortunately there are no roots left at all on mine and you can see all the little gnawing marks on what's left.

These are the little critters i have been trapping. And this pick off the web of their damage looks just like my rose stub. Little demons

Oh that sucks! Hopefully one or all cuttings survive and the main plant grows some roots too.

I still think gophers got the roots. Here voles chew on the canes above ground too.
