Is it strange to carpet only our stairs?
Comments (10)I struggled with this myself... We have a 3 storey home with hardwood on 1st and 2nd floors. As it now stands, we have berber carpet on the stairs & hardwood on the small landings (mid-point where stairs turn corners) Would love to have hardwood stairs, but not a wise decision for us right now. We have an older Lab that has already slipped on hardwood at top/on landings and fallen down stairs. (the vet bills from last fall probably could have paid for hardwood on the stairs!) It's vey costly to do hardwood stairs (esp. for 3 levels) and then in addition place a runner on top for safety so we've just kept the berber carpet on the stairs. I would suggest low pile though... Ours isn't a 'Grand' staircase, so I live with it. Once our sweetie goes to doggie heaven, we know the carpet has to be replaced so just might go the hardwood route....See MoreStaircase carpeting options
Comments (2)We installed new carpeting about a year ago. After looking at many, this is Mohawk. Don't recall the style but is suppose to be impermable to stains as the yarn is a new synthetic. Is does show footsteps but stands nicely when vacuumed. Selected the California style rather than waterfall. Also, I dealt with a carpeting/furniture store rather than a box store because I wanted to be certain it was caringly installed. Our home has many angles so careful matching was necessary. I figure it only cost about $200 additional for well over 150 sq. yards....See MoreCarpeting only on the stairs- Why just the stairs?
Comments (25)If you've ever fallen on stairs, both carpeted and not - you would want carpet on them. I hate carpet and have wood everywhere but carpet on the stairs. When I was building my house I did a lot of research and discovered the bulk of it recommends carpeted stairs for safety. I considered wooden stairs with a runner, but I've had that before and found all the nooks and crannies were horrible to clean. And I've had a 1920's era wooded staircase (two sets actually - one for the family and guests and the second hidden one for servants that sadly didn't come with the house when we purchased it) - had to add these rubber stair treads on them so they weren't so slippery for my older relatives which sort of ruined the beauty of the wood. rubber non-slip stair treads...See MoreStaircase landing HELP! Comments (6)At this stage in your family & needing toy storage, have you considered the cube type cabinet pieces from IKEA with pullout drawer baskets? I found those to be a lifesaver when my kids were small & a great way to keep toys organized. I even labeled the drawers so that as they learned to read, they also learned which toys went to which drawers. It made it easier when it came to picking up (& finding) toys. Above the cube shelving, I could see a fun collage on the wall with favorite family photos, & artwork mixed in a way you like. The key on such a large wall is not using tiny photos & artwork but going a bit larger. Make sure to secure cube shelving to the wall (especially if you have climbers!). Then, you could put a couple live plants in the space. Maybe 1 or 2 on top of the shelving and then a large taller one to one side. Or, faux plants if live plants aren't your thing. I love live plants in a home though. :-) The natural light coming in is fantastic!...See MoreLisa Dipiro
