Razzle Dazzle Variety of Dwarf Crape Myrtle NOT Blooming!?
Comments (19)I have had about a dozen Dazzle Me Pink Crapemyrtles in my Oklahoma garden for the past 4 or 5 years. They are not in an ideal location (only about 2 hours of sun daily), but even so, they have bloomed well for me. One thing I have learned about these particular dwarf crapes is that they do not perform well unless I give them LOTS of water and fertilizer throughout the growing season (unlike my 20 or so standard crapes, which get fertilized twice a year and watered only when it is really hot and dry). I use both timed-release and (weekly) liquid fertilizer applied with the hose, and the more I give them, the better they bloom. I am a long-time gardener, and I have never grown anything that requires as much fertilizer as these dwarf crapes. That said, I just love them and they are definitely worth the extra time and effort. One caution: These crapes did take a couple of years to get established and start blooming. But that might have changed if I had known from the beginning what heavy feeders they are. Dazzle Me Pink has stayed very small (not over about 14 inches tall), probably because of not getting enough sun. But that's what I wanted anyway, so I'm happy. They are nice, compact shrubs and have absolutely no fungus problems. Can't say enough good things about them!...See MoreH. Razzle Dazzle
Comments (8)I got it in a batch of Razzle Dazzle. Would assume those who sell Hadeco bulbs sell it. If I get another one that blooms, would you like it? You have to answer if you'll give the cactus a home first! K...See MoreWhat is your idea of a traditional looking Christmas tree?
Comments (11)The best complement was the year my neighbor told me our tree REALLY needed some water because it was dropping needles... the tree was ARTIFICIAL! Yes, it was dropping needles, but that was because it is old (we need a new one but I'm having trouble finding one with the umbrella style folding branches). My favorite trees have multi-colored lights and an assorted variety of ornaments, no theme other than a celebration of what we have collected over the years. The ornaments our kids made in kindergarten are proudly hung next to the expensive collectible-type ornaments. To me, it's perfect! We have so many ornaments now I'm thinking of putting a tree of one size or another in every room of the house next year. I bought a 4-foot Alpine Cedar last week that is just darling; I picture it in the dining room next year with an array of fishing & camping ornaments we have collected. I also bought a 2-foot tree for the kitchen counter; I picture that one with all the small ornaments that tend to get lost on the big tree. Today I'm hoping to find a 3-foot tree for the top my son's bedroom dresser for his sports-themed ornaments.... I think I'm addicted! (It's my sister's fault. I was telling her I had too many ornaments to display all of them, and she told me my problems was NOT too many ornaments, but too few TREES!)...See MoreLet's discuss Christmas gift-giving
Comments (28)Wow, lots of neat traditions. I find shopping for gifts wearying. I usually start in October and try to be finished by the end of November. I try to leave time in December for decorating, cookie baking and wrapping gifts. We are also away for about 9 days total in December as our kids play in 2 international junior squash tournaments and so this takes a huge chunk out of our Christmas preparation time and also means we cannot have a real tree as we are away and can't water it. We buy for our 3 kids, in-laws, our staff (about 8 people), couple of aunts and uncles, and assorted family. We have done a draw for the family in previous years so that all the adults names are put in a hat and each person then draws and only has to buy 1 gift. But this has fallen by the wayside as part of the family had moved away and sometimes comes back for Christmas and sometimes doesn't. I am more conscious now in trying to buy gifts that are useful or consumable as we all know how easy clutter comes into our homes and how difficult and time consuming it is to take it back out. Traditionally my DH and I usually buy small gifts for each other, most of which will fit in our stockings, requisite gifts are chocolate bars, socks, paperbacks, I always receive a "For Better or For Worse" comic book and the year's stamp set (Canadian), and a CD, you get the idea. We also buy lots of little things for the kids' stockings. Sometimes there may be one big gift for the family (one year it was a large screen T.V. ) and then, the other gifts will be smaller and fewer. I usually get an Odyssey set of tapes (from Focus on the Family) as one of the gifts for the kids as we do lots of driving trips and the kids like listening to them in the car. Just wrapping all the stocking gifts takes forever, but they are so much fun to open Christmas morning. Christmas Eve, the family goes to Church as our Church does not have a Christmas morning service. Then we open presents Christmas morning, have brunch and relax and then start cooking Christmas dinner late afternoon, in-laws come and another round of gift opening takes place. I really like it that we don't have to go anywhere on Christmas day, it really is quite relaxing. My DH jokes that it's the only day in the whole year when the car doesn't leave the driveway!...See Moremaire_cate
