Need help fixing light switch wiring across two rooms.
Comments (9)Well, he double tapped one of the switches, so the other switch depends on that. Need to unhook them and find which black is the live hot. Then wirenut two spare wires to the source and take those to each switch separately to provide constant power to each switch. I suggest cutting power to the circuit, unhooking the blacks and have them not touching anything or each other and turn on power again and testing with a klein voltage tester to find the hot. This is normally how I do it. Just ensure no one else is going to be in the area or able to touch the wires while you are diagnosing. Cant use a cheap tester, they go bad and give false positives and are also too sensitive to differentiate which wire is hot when they work as intended (they start beeping just getting near the box)....See MoreHate my living room. Comments (19)Thank you all for your great ideas. Diana, the living room is the 1st room you enter after passing through a small enclosed entry on our large front porch we also have the deck 9x25 along the side of our house. We live in a New England seaside community so we live and entertain on the 2 areas all summer, so removing that door wouldn’t work. We have a family room off the other end of the deck with a slider. We use the living room for holidays and when company is here I bring in some chairs but there just is no room. I would love to seat 6 comfortably and have a TV tucked in somewhere for the times when grandkids are here or my husband and I don’t want to watch same thing. Other than that, it is the main road through my house! Ugh. Deco, I have attempted to break up this long room by centering love seat opposite fireplace which also allows tv viewing. Put the desk area and storage of grandkids arts and crafts stuff there. Maybe less bulky furniture would free up some space. I did have the tv on a lovely cedar chest but last year put it in that stand in order to confine the chachkis to one space. Lol. Any other spot for TV? We just converted from oil to gas, FP, so plan on converting the fireplace too. Do use it sometimes in winter. Took out the wall between dining and kitchen years ago and it is right next to fam room so not sure how that would work. And you hit the nail on the head with the wall space. Would be happy losing or gaining any furniture if it helps. Only room in my house I hate and it’s the 1st anyone sees. Thanks for replying and all ideas. I really appreciate...See MoreNeed help with recessed lighting for open concept living room area
Comments (7)I like a lot of light as well. I think everything is well lit except for your family room. Definitely not enough light in there (especially if you want the option of a brightly lit space. There is no center lighting and everything has been arrange around the edges of the room. IMO, what you have is a HUGE span with zero lighting which is not at all adequate. Some people prefer room edge lighting and that’s what they’ll recommend. But if you like a lot of light, I don’t think the way your designer set things up will satisfy that need. If it was my home, even though the ceilings are only 8 feet, I would want a center fixture (small chandelier or semi flush)...something pretty. If you are not sure about your furniture placement they can always install the box with lots of extra wire looped in the ceiling so you can adjust it later. Just take pics of your ceiling joists when it’s all opened up (if it is opened up) so you know where everything is located. Makes it easier later. You’ll have a little sheetrock repair, but completely manageable. I would add more cans/wafers around the center of the room and put them on a dimmer. You can always turn them off or dim them if it’s too much light, but if there’s nothing there, you’re stuck with a dark room and no real way to fix it (other than having your electrician return and hack up your ceiling). I’m not a fan of LED, but some people love it. Just make sure you like the type of light they put out before you bite the bullet on them....See MoreIdeas/help to help bring more light into a living room
Comments (5)Thanks for the replies! I've updated the floor plan in the original post to have the windows. Here's a link to a video walkthrough of it in its current state. https://photos.app.goo.gl/hf2117gjeGXEs42Y6 The building was built in 1986, so building code was much less stringent then. On the kitchen side there is roughly 30" between the two properties, but there is an overhang on the upstairs unit that covers the area where the windows on that wall are, so very little light gets in. There may be more than 1' on the other side, but it's so close that minimal light gets in as the other property is also two stories high. Skylights won't work as this is the lower unit with an identical layout above....See MoreBeth H. :
