My new chair?? Or is it??

I've been having so much sciatic pain while standing and cutting fabric that I thought I would try this chair. It's not as much a chair as it is a leaning post. You adjust it up quite high and lean back into it. It does support a bit of your butt, and so far, it's been really helpful. It doesn't roll around, because you'd end up on the floor, so it's in the way, but when I need to cut for any length of time, it works wonderfully.

I hope you find something that works for you, Lois. Although, I can't see that anything has stopped you from going from one project to another. lol

Lois, I have an exercise that relieves sciatic pain that an old chiropractor showed me many years ago. You stand in a doorway (to catch yourself if you lose your balance). Place your right heel in the arch of your left foot (-l). Then you bend over. Don't push or reach- just hang there for a little while. Then do it in the other direction. That opens up that area of your hips and relieves the pressure on that nerve. It helps me.

that is very cool! Last week I think, I saw a link from the Crafty Chica website where a company is sending out Adirondak (is that right?) chairs for different artists to 'redo' - this one lady put a wedding ring quilt motif on hers and it was pretty neat. I really like yours, I've never been much of a fan of the plastic chairs, but then again, I never thought of changing them in any way - thank you for opening me to other possibilities.... I just love this forum!!! Everyone's creativity and willingness to share ideas and brainstorm, its just wonderful!!

We actually have a total of three tables w/ sewing machine bases. Weird, I know, and we didn't really plan to do that! Two of them are at our summer place -- one is a coffee table, so it's a very low base, and the other is a narrower, taller one, and it's an end table. So I guess they come in some different sizes, and this is definitely wider than the others we have. Anyway, no, the table isn't tippy at all. It's not a very large table; I think it's 32" x 60".

Seriously that looks fantastic! (and you know had you said you got it on a designer website for a clearance of $400 we would still say you did great!)....but the fact that it came from tarjay is just the icing on the cake. Enjoy!

Fabulous find and beautiful chair! I went to the Goodwill Store with my daughter the other night to look for a tacky Christmas sweater. The only thing I saw that I was remotely interested in was what looked like to be a dime store print with a bad looking frame. The faux mat was printed on the paper with the scene, however, the scene and colors were beautiful! It was a large hunting scene. For $9.99, I debated getting it and having the print reframed. After thinking on it a bit, I decided that would cost too much to reframe, plus I had nowhere to hang it. I passed, but do plan to go back to the store in the future. Small store, though. OK, Since the title of this thread is "Scored an awesome win", I just have to share my win from last week. Hope you don't mind instead of my starting my own thread. Maybe others will chime in with their wins or bargains. I received a call from the Ellen DeGeneres Show last Thursday night. I won Day 5 of her Christmas Giveaways! Four prizes were really nice, and four were some items that we can't or will never use.

My hubby has sciatica. Was wondering, Lois..do you just keep your ankle against the arch or do you lift the left foot a bit and 'tuck' the heel in there? Thanks. Geraldine

I posted that idea for Lois. No, you don't keep your ankle against the arch. You keep your heel against the arch so that your feet are at right angles to each other (like forming a T). Don't try to reach the floor. Just bend over and hang there, totally relaxed. Let the area in your hips relax and "open up", for lack of a better description. Then reverse your feet and hang the other way.

If it works go fo it. You obviously will need a much different chair at your machine.But being comfortable is just as important as fabric.

loisflan...the thing that helped me more than anything else was doing away with the foot pedal...most of the new machines have the option of not using the foot pedal, just the start/stop button. I am in my 60's and took to it immediately..so much better...I have my machine set up so that I can put my feet on a footstool while I sew....heaven! Go to a dealer and ask to try one out...or maybe you know someone who has a machine with that feature. You can get anything from a cheap Brother,Singer,etc, all the way up to a high end machine.

Thank you for all the ideas for relieving my back pain. Happily, I have no problem at this time with the foot pedal. I do have a knee control as well as a start/stop button if that becomes necessary. Right now, it's the standing that is problematic, and my new leaning chair really helps with that. Hanging as Bkay suggested does relieve the pain temporarily too.

I bought a backless stool from Amazon a few while back to do micro quilting on my long arm. I've found I love it at my sit down machine as well! I had an armless secretary type chair I was using. i haven't used it at my cutting table, but I don't know why it wouldn't work. My chair was pretty inexpensive and haven't had any problems with it.
