Sansevieria Cylindrica
Comments (47)Funny thing about Sansevieria...I have never seen one killed for lack of care. They are so forgiving. My mother once left a pot filled with Sans just outside the basement door during the entire winter...They survived the cold! Granted, they were in a niche and weren't sitting in the snow, but they were outdoors...I don't have to tell you how low NYC temps can fall Dec, Jan & Feb. A very successful succulent grower very highly recommended Tomato Plant Food to me for succulents...I have always fed them just that. All my succulents receive a light dose of Tomato Plant Food in a monthly watering March through Sept. From my Thanksgiving, Christmas, & Easter Cactus to my Haworthias, Opuntias, Cereus, Echinopsis, Euphorbia, Huernia, Stapelia, Epiphyllum, Jades, Aloes, Sans...You name it...They all receive it. If anything, I receive a lot of "How did you get these to grow so green?" comments. A note to all posters: You guys all have the most marvelous green thumbs and a wonderful array of plants. Keep on nurturing those beauties...They are so obviously grateful and rewarding. Thank you for sharing....See Moresansevieria cylindrica form
Comments (17)Stuart, I am not exactly sure what you are saying, given the photos that are offered. I have never seen any pups grow to be so dramatically different from the parent plant. I have several cylindricas, and about 5 Boncels are various sizes, and have propagated both from pups growing from the parent plant AND from leaves that accidentally broke off. (Couldn't throw them out -- had to save them.) Is a leaf that was broken off the parent plant or removed what you mean by a "cutting?" I have never seen a leaf cutting generate pups so different from the parent. But....learn something every day, I guess, right?...See MoreSansevieria cylindrica var. patula 'Boncel': Is this normal?
Comments (12)No, I don't think it's normal. I have a few of these plants. They DO get larger over time, and it is hard to retain the plumpness of all the leaves, but I have not experienced shriveling with any of mine. I suspect that SOMETHING is wrong down in the soil, and if it were mine, I would un-pot it and check the root structure thoroughly. Perhaps you just need to add more drainage-type material -- perlite, some kind of chicken grit or tiny pebbles, etc. My Sans are in mixes that are, at MOST, 1/3 cactus/succulent soil, and sometimes only 25%. The rest of material for better drainage. Only way to know for sure is to check the root system. My experience with succulents of all kinds is that when they get mushy in some way, it's a sign of too much watering (or okay watering but insufficient drainage)....See MoreLabeled as sansevieria cylindrica “dragon fingers”
Comments (7)I heard a story that growers in China use growth inhibitors to dwarf the plants and after several years the new pups produced will grow like standard cylindrica. There is a cult. that is dwarf but could be mixed up with the fakes....See Morerina_Ontario,Canada 5a
