Replace just upper cabinets - different color?
Comments (16)Thank you all so much for your great advice. Live wire oak - yes, you are right. Some people do like the look of 30 in cabinets. My issue is just as much about my lack of storage as it is my preference for taller cabinets. I really like the idea of adding cabinets on top with glass. I guess that's called stacked cabinetry? After browsing online, I might actually like that look more than the solid 42 inch. I would probably do textured glass because it would be more functional than decorative. Okay... I think I know the answer to this last question, but I thought I'd throw it out there just in case. I would have to keep the existing uppers and the new top cabinets the same color, right? Either stick with the wood or have everything painted white? For some reason, I think I remember seeing someone on this site about 6 months ago who posted a picture with white on top of wood?! But I'm probably wrong. Pbrisjar - The backsplash behind my stove is just a 4x2 piece of Armstrong Metallaire. I ordered it online from Lowes. (I think shipping was outrageous to have it sent to the house, so I did store delivery). Mine is the large floral pattern. And it is actually metal. Home Depot sells a faux tin backsplash that is made of plastic. This isn't the same thing....See MoreHow to handle crown molding between 2 cabinets of different colors
Comments (18)"Well, it's not really crown, but more like a flat board to fill the gap, and a strip of cove molding along the top to make up for the uneven ceilings." This statement heads me in a different direction. There's a joint between the two cabinets now. If you are basically putting in flat fill pieces (as you would do in a modern kitchen) I would put in two pieces of wood, with the joint lined up with the cabinets, and paint each the color of the cabinet below. Since this is usually done in a modern kitchen that's the example I found and you can see below they extended the color of the cabinet below up to the ceiling. I realize you don't have a modern kitchen -- but you are proposing a modern style fill strip for the gap so here ya go:...See Morepaint cabinet different color or not?
Comments (17)So my cabinets are 20 years old, which isn't really old at all right? Except that they were so poorly constructed, they're literally falling apart. You can't see the interiors, but they're cracked, the door hinges are junk, always causing the doors to wobble, if I had a nickel for every time we've had them tuned up....so this job all began as 'let's get a new kitchen and update the bathrooms while we're at it'. Now we are refinishing our 20 year old oak floors with a new stain color, not replacing the floors, so I just up and said walnut, but tbd on stain color. My floors are in excellent shape but the 20 year old stain has oranged and 4 kids and dogs. Yeah it's time. My fabricator cut a square out for me. It does have a hint of sage in the grey. Which honestly doesn't really help my love of teal, but I've bought it so it's mine. SO back to the original question. Seeing how busy my stone is, would you still paint the island a different color or keep it all white Dove. If I do paint it, I'm going to make it very subtle. No dark color for me. Backsplash will be subtle too....See MorePaint cabinets same/different color in mud/laundry combined
Comments (1)Having the cabinets a different colour is not a problem as long as you're conscious of how the colours in the two rooms interact. The colours should look complimentary to each other and you can create a cohesive flow between rooms by carrying one of the colours into the other room. For example, if you have white cabinets in the laundry and green cabinets in the mud room, it will look more cohesive if you have green accents and accessories in the laundry room. You can see an example here where someone tied in a red wall in another room with red accents throughout the open space....See MoreElizabeth
