Tinted Windows
Comments (8)Plants are really not 'adjusting' organisms. They are subject to cause/effect relationships with their environment and are more accurately termed reactive. Moving a plant to any light conditions other than ideal will cause a reaction, but the plant will not adjust to the less than ideal conditions. We can reliably predict that it will grow with slowed metabolism, show longer internodes, grow larger leaves, make less food, use less water, grow with less vitality than you were used to seeing, exhibit some degree of stress symptoms, etc. These are reactions that you should expect to be persistent, as long as the cultural adversity remains a part of the plant's existence. Window films are all different. Some are reflective and some simply absorb a portion of the light as it passes. All windows and films have an impact on visible light transmission - which is the portion of the spectrum important to plant growth. An insulating glass unit w/o a pyrolytic coating (like low-e glass) usually allows around 75% visible light transmission. A single lite of moderately tinted glass will further reduce light transmission by up to 50%, so a tinted window could easily reduce light transmission to 40% of available light. Though applied films vary in their transmissive reduction, you can expect them to fairly closely mimic the reductions caused by tinted glass products. Comments (6)Golfgeek is correct about the 5'. Windows within 5' of the water's edge must be glazed with safety glass. Below is a link to the City of Frisco swimming pool covenants (scroll down below the permitting info). Now you said one window is 4-1/2" away, hopefully you mean feet rather than inches as a pool that close to the house would require a structural engineering report as well (criteria is 1:1 back of beam to foundation). The drive gate is probably going to require discussion with the inspector or a code offical, it's a little fuzzy in the ordinance. It says that one non-pedestrian yard gate is allowed, but it must remain closed and locked whenever the pool is not in use. Now the fact that they call it a "yard gate" makes me think a driveway gate may not be allowable since it has to be opened and closed for car access. But it's not clear. I've done commercial work in Frisco and their inspectors are very picky. I doubt you'd sneak anything past them. Comments (4)There are lots of tinting films available, and some of them actually work as advertised, but as Guy pointed out tinting your windows with an aftermarket film will void the manufacturer warranty. I suspect that Guy has replaced more than one broken window in his career because of broken glass caused by using aftermarket films. If your windows have a LowE coating then the possibility of cracking the glass increases a good bit. If they are clear glass then it is less likely, but still very possible. Also, depending on who the window manufacturer is, and what IG spacer they use, there is a possibility of seal failure or outgassing inside the airspace with some spacer materials....See MoreIndoor Plants and Low-e/SunCoat Tinted Windows
Comments (1)SunCoat max (i.e. Cardinal Low-e 366) will cut down on the SHGC to the extent that it will certainly impact any passive solar heating ability of the sun. If you rely on passive solar, you need to re-examine your choices. Where is the home located? Read the article linked below....
