Thanks, I believe you are referring to the porch/garage image I posted. I am more concerned about modernising our mansard style roof, as I believe this really dates the property at the moment

That's a gambrel roof. Not too many ways to modernize it. I actually love them as they are and encourage people to work with them, and the period homes they are on.

I think because the roof is covered in moss and the 1st floor section isn’t great looking either, it really lets it down. I am definitely going to look into replacing the windows to match the new door.

I am concerned if I do the garage/porch idea above, it will look out of place with the weathered existing slate tiles. I have been looking at tata steel roofs as an option.

The photos above look like a mash up with no architectural style. It seems the attached house has a different color roof. These are difficult situations to navigate because imo, the whole roof should be replaced with a new one and it should be the same roof, same color. Can you get the moss off your side of the roof, or might your neighbor agree to a new roof on their side as well. I suspect they won't. If that's the case, I'd try to clean up my side and wait until the neighbors might NEED a new roof. You can do other cosmetic things, such as changing out windows, and trim and painting to get a different look while still maintaining the architectural integrity of the home.

Design Girl, I think my main concern is that I really want to proceed with the garage extension and porch redesign first. But whatever roofing design I use for that I will have to apply to the rest of the house to bring it in sync. I’m just not sure what would look best really

I looked very closely at your photos. Are you keeping the shingles as siding? Is the cross-hatching in the upper part of your existing windows a permanent feature of those windows and are you keeping that feature?

If so, I'm not sure a modern door like the one you chose really works. Was thinking this arrangement might --

I think extending the porch and garage is a great idea!! I would consider redoing the entire roof. It looks discolored from the weather. Then I’d paint all the trim black! Redo the driveway? Add lighting ... I see the potential and I think it’ll look great soon!!

Ital mover, thanks for your comment. I don’t know how to directly reply so I have to comment like this. The roof on the side of the house could potentially be changed if necessary to align with the new design philosophy. Windows will likely change so the hatching will not stay, but for now they are part of the existing windows.

I agree without significant modernisation, the door wouldn’t suit. But we both really love that style door, so are thinking of ways to make it work. I love the option you have suggested, however, i find it difficult to visualise with our roof being so different to the conventional house.

It is very discoloured and covered in moss, which I believe really brings down the curb appeal.

The driveway is on our hit list but only once the Garage extension is done for obvious reasons.

Black windows we do like, matching in with a door and roller garage door also. But what material/design for the roof is our sticking point.

Right. I Totaly hear you. I’d just redo the roof in a black typical shingles. It’s not sooo bad lol! The style roof is unique and different but I think when it’s new fresh and clean you’ll begin to like it. I love the lighting you added looks great!! I think this is a great project. Really into it!!

Also. I love the door!!! So much character!! I think sanding and repainting or staining it is a great option. I also love recommending removing it and using it in a new space. Would love to see that as a pantry door. A study door closet door.... there are so many options. Do not throw it away!! I love it

Im thinking if I am taking this opportunity to spend out quite a lot of money whether to look into alternative cladding options for the partial roof to really make it stand out.

Do you mean the existing porch door? It is a UPVC door at present and with the garage extension I’ll likely block up the surrounding windows and replace with a solid door with two side glass panels.

Here is another door I spotted I thought might be a compromise between business-modern and homey-traditional, but again, I'm not sure about this door if you are keeping any cross hatching on the house windows -- which would give it kind of a tudor-old-world

I don't see a problem using plain standard roofing material for the roof. What I don't quite get is whether there are split shingles on the front of the house. It's hard to tell from the photo.

I actually really like that door. Although it doesn’t have the large vertical handle we have always liked, it still looks nice and modern.

The cross hatching will likely go with the windows to be honest, itll be probably a plain pane glass.

They are currently individual slate tiles, hopefully this photo captures it better. As you can see, the porch was done with new materials and looks significantly better. But if I am to integrate my side garage with my front porch, will I have to reroof my side extension?

Probably will need to add to the roof with the extension

you should be able to get any door with any handle you like. If you prefer a natural wood door, the door manufacturer will add whatever hardware you prefer, and you could get it in black metal, or other materials
