What you have there is just a leaf with petiole. What you need is a section of stem which the petiole was attached to. The petiole and leaf come from a node along the main stem of the plant. That is also where roots come from. A leaf and petiole on their own will wither away.

I actually didn't know this, either - but a friend that I delivered some plants to, had one - which is how I know this. I tried it, too, but didn't have any luck. (His was green.) It looked to be a medium-sized leaf - he said it broke off of a plant he had moved, and he didn't know it would root, but tried it anyway, and it was sitting in a cup of water - with many roots. The (two) that I tried, were OLD, huge leaves from my variegated Thai Constellation which were old and browning - which might have led to my non-success.

Hope so too! I saw someone use a big clear storage tub for theirs as well. This is pretty common, however, this person did theirs upside-down. They put the lid on the floor/table whatever, then put the plant on the lid, then put the container over it so it's like a dome rather than having to put the plant down in something. You lift it off. If that makes sense. I think they also sell those really huge storage type ziploc bags at some dollar stores and walmart. My philo is just a tragedy now. It's in a green house (my friend has a nursery so he took it there for me). But it seems like it's just slowly dying. I tried everything to get it to root and it wouldn't root. It sat for 3 months in water, another month in leca, then I just freaked out and gave it to him. He planted it directly in soil. Most of the leaves are gone now. I think there is one left. And I really don't know if it will make it. I try not to think about it. But you understand, it is still bothering me!
