Yes, another option is to only use one of my leather chairs and have an "everyday" arrangement and then pull up extra seating when necessary. So, this would seat 4-5. And then I'd pull up the extra rattan chair and the two ottomans to seat 8. Or does it seem unbalanced having the larger leather chair and the smaller rattan chair flanking the fireplace?

@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout.

After posting this I realized there are some things I should mention...the biggest delimma is with the large doorway opening to dining room - it is “almost” in the middle of the large wall in the room and is diagonally across from the fireplace. This drives me crazy, as it breaks up the room making a small room feel smaller by kind of dividing it when it comes to furniture placement. So the sofa (where it is placed now) is off-center to fireplace. I used to have sofa "floating" in center of room facing the French doors and the buffet was on current sofa wall (which I really liked) but trying to decide where chairs looked best was quite challenging. Also, I was stumped as to what to put on small staircase wall under the mirror. Maybe this really was a better layout though? I most definitely plan to replace the current dated drapes on window and add some flanking french doors as well. (Thinking same color as walls?...suggestions here)...My mantle needs help decorating, but is ONLY 6” deep! The sofa will be reupholstered some year soon, (husband’s grandmother’s from 1920), but in meantime, I need ideas for accent pillows - this is a HUGE struggle for me. I can get rid of furniture also if there is too much in your opinion. Thank you for your suggestions! Been waiting a long time to post this, and very excited to get designers’ input!!

Welcome to California! Is the wall beside the fireplace large enough to house the tv. I see in one pic attached they have a console table to the left of the FP, i would put your tv there, a sectional would be a bad idea here but you might get away with a sofa that has a chase at the end which would be placed to the side of the sliding glass door.
