How should I brighten up my kitchen? Part 2
Comments (16)I looked back over your pics this morning with pleasure, and I just thought of something. Can the light over the island be lowered? More light on the front of the cabinets would really make the room feel lighter. Can't tell from the pics if dropping the light puts it in the way or not. The chandelier style is the problem--there is so much metal below the bulbs that getting the bulbs where you would like them just may not work. Not a big project if it will help....See MoreWhat backsplash would you use to brighten up room?
Comments (8)I have typhoon bordeaux with cherry cabinets and went with a creamy subway tile. I brought home over 20 smaples from 6 stores and the best match to my granite was biscuit by American Olean. I got it from Roma tile in Watertown and it was only $3.65/sq ft and they stock it. There's a bunch more tile stores in Watertown - tile showcase has beautiful tile but is a bit more pricey. They had a gorgeous crackle tile that had great depth. If I didn't alreay have brick in part of my backsplash I would have gone with that....See MoreHow should I brighten up my dark kitchen?
Comments (20)Get a lighter counter that has some reflective characteristics, repaint the walls with a lighter colored paint, and live with it for a while before doing the backsplash. We have medium dark cherry perimeter cabinets in our kitchen that faces SE, but there is a 10' deep front porch with an 11' roof including overhang that darkens the kitchen. It has a triple window over 7' wide and 4' high, and two 10" SunTunnels. The counters are a medium green granite. The center square island has creme painted cabinets and a medium light limestone/marble top. My walls look like they are about the same color as yours appear in your picture, and the floor is cream colored cork. The kitchen feels too dark to me. Our lower level galley kitchen has similar medium dark cherry cabinets with a light semi-shiny patterned laminate, and the paint is a lighter shade of the paint that is upstairs. The triple window 7' wide by 4' high is 24' across the room from it. This kitchen should feel darker than the one upstairs, but doesn't, no matter what time of day or night it is. Both kitchens are well lit. I am going to paint the upstairs kitchen a lighter better color that makes both the cabinets and counter top have a little more umph. If I could change to a lighter counter top in the upstairs kitchen, I would. There is no doubt in my mind that these 2 changes would make my upstairs kitchen feel lighter, based on how much lighter the lower level kitchen feels. Comments (20)The fridge was the first thing I noticed also....perhaps a decorative screen could disguise that...how much room do you have on that wall to add something useful there to disguise it?...the challenge here is that there isn’t really any space to add decor here....paint is really the only option to make a noticeable difference ...painting cabinets is not a job for an amateur...so that leaves the walls....there isn’t much wall space so you could do a bright color that you like...or wall paper...what is your favorite color? I always like a pale but bright aqua in areas that are small and have dark elements...the back wall and soffit could be a different color like a pale Apple green...this would bring the most life and excitement to the area with the least amount of work....add a screen ...also spray painted if you like ...in front of the fridge .......See MoreRelated Professionals
