stripping paint and refinishing.
Comments (6)You may not want poly at all. When you do test pieces, explore more than poly. Do some internet reading/research. One of my friends did everything in tung oil. It is a gorgeous low sheen. It is not as protected as putting a layer of poly, but poly is, after all, a layer of plastic. The tung oil is a layer of oil. but at the same time, there is a difference between "tung oil finish" and pure tung oil. (You may find that you need to learn more than you ever meant to. Grin.) On the plus side, even though tung is less protective, it is also very easy to do repairs/upkeep, so it has its positives also. Experiment as ericwi suggested. If you are willing to restrip to get the look you want, I think you may find that you would rather use the "old fashioned stuff."...See MoreStrip and refinish help please
Comments (1)I'm no expert, but I'll take a crack: Is there a piece small enough you could drag it to a paint store? (not HD or Lowe's, but a Sherwin Williams or Licht.) They can ID the finish and prescribe a method. Otherwise just a light sand usually gives enough "tooth" for a primer. You shouldn't have to strip because the paint will cover any color left. You could test on an inside rail. If the finish is structurally failing though, you might have to strip - because that finish, and everything you lay on top of it, could just keep on coming off. Good luck -k...See MorePaint or refinishing MCM wood tongue and groove wall ideas
Comments (32)Solid wood paneling is a classic, very valuable and cannot be replaced. I'd do something to keep that. I agree that the original aesthetic of the wood was to add warmth with all the natural hard materials like stone, slate, iron, etc. Depends on how much of a purist you want to be with the aesthetic. The original design is flexible as to what colors and stains would work. You could paint too. The only real crime would be to tear out something that is as valuable as real wood paneling. It was even expensive back in the day when it was installed. It has value because it is high quality and beautiful. I would seek to do something that retains the pluses. If you want to maintain your house as an homage to the middle of the last century, then obviously "restore" rather than "redo." Oh, and just a ponder, is that two story fireplace material original? Or was it originally brick too? Love your house BTW! Very elegant....See MoreNEED HELP! Need some ideas for a neutral paint color
