Need advice re under-sink water filtration systems please
Comments (11)Ours is from Multi Pure. We like it a lot. I found it on a website listing water filters that have NSF 53 certification. Most water filters, if they're certified at all, only have NSF 42 certification, which is called "aesthetic effects"--that means it removes contaminants that make the water look or taste funny, but not all the invisible ones that are actually the worst for your health. NSF 53 is for health effects, so it removes not only the things that affect look and taste, but also the other stuff. You can look on this site to find NSF 53 filters of whatever type you want (undercounter, on counter...) and it shows you what contaminants they remove: http://www.nsf.org/certified/dwtu/ The reason we went with this rather than with a bigger-name brand is because I just couldn't find actual information about the big-name brands. I wanted a list of specifically what they removed, and how much of it they removed. That doesn't seem like a lot to ask, but surprisingly, the big-name brands don't list that info anywhere! That made me kind of not trust them, actually, so we went with one that both (a) provided that information and (b) had been third-party certified (by the NSF) so we could be sure that info was accurate. It was a very easy install for the plumber and my husband could probably have done it himself, but we just wanted it done professionally. The water is great--we did a blind taste test on each other after it was installed, and we could tell tap water from this water, no problem. Our model is the 1200EL, and we chose a brushed nickel faucet--you can get any of about six different finishes. We have a 23" sink at the moment and the unit fits fine in the space underneath. We didn't have to remove any of our other stuff (our cleaning products etc. are under there too). Here is a link that might be useful: MultiPure water filters...See MoreKitchen sink advice,..please
Comments (7)I had SS in the last house. Went with Blanco Silgranit in this one. Neither are apron front, though I love the style for aesthetic and functional (I'm short!) reasons. I would be certain that your cabinet guy or GC really knows how to install the apron front sink -- it is not a "normal" install. I suspect that when a contractor tries to steer you away from something for a reason that doesn't quite hold water (pardon the pun) maybe there is another reason he's trying to dissuade you -- like he has never installed that kind of widget before and doesn't want to figure it out. I personally try to make choices such that I am not the guinea pig, IYKWIM!...See MoreSink options-- advice please
Comments (3)It's so funny, I was about to post an earlier thread in which someone put a photo of their spectacular ss apronfront sink- and low and behold, it happens to be the sink of gglks! I'll put the thread in below, gglks, you have an amazing kitchen- love the window right to the sink! I'm glad you put this in, because I was tossing around similar ideas/ concerns. We went to dinner at a friend's house that has a white sink (I don't know the exact material) that is stained with part of the enamel off of it. Before thinking of re-doing our kitchen, I never really noticed, but I don't want to put in a sink that can't deal with the heavy traffic of our family. We have three small children and we aren't easy on anything. But, how to do that and keep with the look of an older house? I'll definitly be watching this thread to see what others say! Thanks for posting... Here is a link that might be useful: Fabulous sink!...See MoreAppliance/Sink Layout Advice, please!!
Comments (36)Meant to add "what remodelfla said." That's a lay-out similar to what I'm planning when we remodel. Right now I'm leaning towards adding a prep sink to the island (sure would have come in handy at Thanksgiving) but I also like the idea of having my relatively small island free and clear of obstructions. I also like Buehl's plan but I didn't realize you were short on wall there. But definitely lose that one island stool as she suggests. 44" is not enough clearance between two seating areas, IMO. One more thought. Have you considered a corner sink? You'd need to shift your cooktop down a bit but this set-up might be a possibility for you. Put the DW next to the fridge, than a set of drawers or garbage pull-out or ? between DW and corner sink. I suggest this in case you are tight on space to put the DW between fridge and sink (I can't tell by your drawing above) and don't like the idea of a sink off-center from the window. It would be similar to lucretzia's kitchen set: (see more of her lovely kitchen here or this one featured at Kelly Morisseau's blog, Kitchen Sync. Both of the above have corner windows, which you don't have, but hopefully they will give you additional ideas for your kitchen....See MoreAmy Gonzalez
